Why not just rebuild or have the starter rebuilt?

I changed mine last night, 67 Lesabre 340, I was hoping one of the previous owners / mechanics had left the bracket off, no such luck. 2 hours later with all the correct words the new starter is on.

They help a lot! :TU: Now, is your new starter using the old 'L' bracket?

I took the original starter off of a 78 Coupe DeVille (425, 72k miles) a few years ago. It had the bracket. BTW, it did not need repacement;when it dropped it i found the cable was loose. I had starter problems with an SBC in a Chevy truck--it would torque its way out of alignment and miss teeth on the flex plate. I bought the bracket from GM and added it when I changed the 'plate.

It had a bracket bolted to the side of the case,or the end of the bolt? We're talking side of the case, the end bracket is pretty common...if it has'nt been left off.

Im not sure if it is the same for a Lesabre but on my 69 with the 350-4 the L bracket wasnt a problem at all. 1/2 inch wrench closed end set it on the starter nut couple of turns it was finger loose. This was the original starter. The remaned replacement did not have the threaded hole for the bracket so I left it off. Total time of replacement 30 mins. I guess my question is are there differences on the Lesabres and GS's?
