Heater Blower Motor Hookup

The blower motor for the heater in my 70 Skylark is not working. Underneath the dash is a plug with 4 wires - light blue, brown, yellow and blue with white stripe. These wires become hot when I flip the fan switch. This plug is not connected to anything and I can't find what it is supposed to plug into.
    Thanks,

Another possibility is that this plug was pushed back through the firewall and is not supposed to be under the dash.

Also the blower motor may have given up or the squirrel cage fan fraged. The plug may very well have been pushed back through in the attempt to DX the problem. THe inner fender must be un screwed and carefully pulled down or the outer fender must be taken off to change it. Do not omit the ground wire that attaches inboard of the fender to a lug. If it was omitted for some reason then that alone will cause it to be inoperative.

Good Luck! Have benn there and done this and it is no fun.

    Air car?

    Brian,

If it is an AC car, I think the plug was pushed back thru the firewall.. Look at the pic I posted, and go find the blower motor resistor assembly, in the AC box, the arrow shows you the general place to look.

Even if the motor is functional, it will not work without this hooked up.

If the car is non-AC, then this resistor unit is in the airbox under the dash.

I wish I had a better picture for you.. but it will give you a place to look..

The car WAS equipped with A/C. The car now has no A/C or heater box. The blower is still there, so I hoped that if I could get the blower working, I could build the box and get the heater functional. There appears to be two wires coming from the blower, one is grounded to the firewall and the other goes to a relay. I can hear the relay clicking when I turn the blower switch on high.
I have to confess that when I was a stupid 16 year old kid, I was the one that removed the A/C and box - just wanted a drag car. Now many years later (and hopefully smarter) I want a daily driver.
    Thanks for the help.

I got the blower motor working - problem with a connection near the relay. Blower works on high only. The 4 wire plug that I asked about appears to control the lower settings, as the wires become hot when I turn the fan to the lower settings.

That would be correct Brian, as getting the fan to run slower is the purpose of the resistors.

You must have had the dreaded "high blower" wiring harness bad connection, between the AC Harness and the main engine wiring harness... or at the plug itself.. very common.. Now, go to a salvage yard, and locate a set of blower resistors.. most GM cars of that vintage used the same type... and then put them in your new "air box" and you will again have speed control.
