What a good handling time on model paint?

Needed a cell phone agian, just do pre pay.
Walmart had Virgin ones on sale for $15, Virgin gets good signal out here where others don't.

All they had was 1 left and it was pink. Painted it with testors blue.
    [Even the free matching headset.]

Did prep. Been several hours, even sat on top of the computer monitor where it warm for some time. Still seems soft. How long before I shove it in my pocket n carry it around?

Would of used quicker dry spray paint but to much masking.

I have used a food dehydrator with the top 2 shelf's cut out (just use the outer ring's) you can dry any paint in just 2-3 hours ,just plug it in and come back later

Also have this problem with my Son's pinewood derby car. Primed it, seemed to dry fine, left it for a day or two, and it must have soaked up some moisture, cause when I painted it, with "Testors" model paint on one side, the primer now seems to be damp and the paint side is soft and gummy. (Over 24 hours.) Tried a hair dryer on it, but it made it even worse! Will wait another 24, but time is begining to run out. May just paint the other side and then clear coat it the day before the weigh in. Even though it may do bad things to the paint, the clear coat might harden the outside enough for it to be handled.

Funny, never seemed to have this problem with regular paints like Duplicolor, Plastikote, or Krylon.:Do No: Thats what I get for wanting to use more cool colors.:error: :af:

I had no luck with the Testors model paint.
    Just stayed gummy and soft.

Ened up using Rustolem painter choice fast drying stuff, around $5 in a spray bomb but came out nice. And as it said, fast drying. Well cured and not rubbing off.

I could just rub the model paint and get blue on me.

They must not make Testors paint like I remember.

You are correct, I don't remember it being this troublesome. My paint is still not cured on the bottom. I went ahead anyway on the top. The weigh in is this Friday and I have a lot to do yet, to put it all together.

Looks like I will wait until Wednesday and spray it with clear several times. I need to handle this thing quite roughly, to put this thing together. I hope the clear coat helps.

All I know is, I won't be using any "Testors" model paint for anything in the future.

I have built model cars for years and usually use DupliColor paint because it dries so fast. But just about any paint will be ok as long as you use a good primer under it. I've used Testor, DupliColor, PlastiKote (don't recommend that though) and Tamiya. I keep going back to DupliColor because it works. All of it will need a week to gas-out though, the solvents do not disappear in just a few hours even if you use a dehydrator. Typical dry-times are a week for color and an additional week for clear if you wait to put it on after the color coats gas-out.

I do like the Testor clear though, it's far glossier than anything else I've tried.

I've used DupliColor for many years with great sucess. After I paint, I put the model in a dedicated microwave oven for about 10 seconds. The paint flows better and probably dries a little quicker. I haven't melted a car yet.

Don't use the family microwave, everything will smell & taste like paint. Besides, the wife will get really pi$$ed off.:blast:
