Had some fun with a nice SS 396 4speed chevelle today. Sounded very good, healthy and a little louder than my buick. Mine sounds really good, search by my user name and you will find a YouTube video. It was either a 68 or 69, I think a 69. It had full length headers, I could see them when he pulled up behind me. Mostly looked like my GSX which also has full length headers. It had a healthy cam and the badges said 396, but I don't know if that is what was in it or something bigger, I would est something bigger by the sound, but that's a guess. Here's the story, I leave the gym and he's at a light and I pull up next to him, the lope of the beast gets his attention and he looks over, nice guy, we wave. Were 2-3 cars deep and this is a busy street that I would never race on anyway, way too many stores, inlets outlets and bottom line, not safe to play around. Traffic thins a bit and I get in a left turn lane to head back home on a street that from this light to the next light, say 1/2 mile, has ZERO inlets or outlets, just a big field. So..... The absolute perfect place to have some fun. At this point I have no idea if he will pull behind me or keep going straight. Yes, he pulled behind me and I knew he did it to have some fun. Left turn light turns green, I very slowly pull away and move to the outside lane of the 2 lane road, it's a 4 lane road, 2 each side just to be clear. So I go wide as you should, he takes the inside lane and I'm holding it in first and going 15ish mph, he is pulling up and when his front bumper was at what I would say my rear number, he nails it.... It's a healthy SS, no question he's on it, I floor it and take her to 5500 (will fill in why below), shift into second and take her to I think 5000 and let off. At that point I had pulled what I est 2 car lengths, maybe a little more, maybe a little less, but I was pulling and pulling and if we went longer the gap would have increased. Since I still have the factory 3/8 fuel line and have yet to convert to 1/2, which will be done this year, I don't take it past 5500. With that said, this combo never peaked on engine dyno, the HP number in my auto sig was at 6000rpm and it was shut down, never peaked. Point is, when I unleash that final 500rpm's..... Watch out...:TU: At the next light he made a u-turn, as I said.... Very cool guy and he followed me to have some fun. Big wave and I even saw him a little later after a home depot stop. He was going in opposite directions and again gave big wave. Even though I live in the bay area which has millions of people and one city blends into the other, its not like that south of san jose, I'm the next town south of San Jose and we are separated by farm land. South of us is gilroy, garlic capital of the world, south of that is all small cities and farms until you hit north LA. Our town has three exits off the 101 freeway and 20k people, very small town but close to cement city. Take care Vinman out.....
