Hi all I am posting this for info purposes, as some of you have not seen the GM Canada documentation report for cars that were built/sold new in Canada. It contains the same info as found in a Wayne Roberts' report, but in a more concise manner. What is interesting from this report and if I am interpreting this correctly, it appears that 285 of the 678 GSX's made in 1970, ended up in Canada. I do not own this GSX, but I know who the previous owner was, which is why I have redacted the owners name. However, if the current owner is a member of this forum, I will be pleased to send this report to him/her.
The 285 cars into Canada were all model 44637 which means they were big block cars (GS455, GS Stage 1) some of which were GSXs, but not all 285. The documentation for the cars built or sold new in Canada is great piece of documentation to have. The documents are now obtained from Vintage Vehicle Services www.vintagevehicleservices.com

Here is the Canadian documentation for my car. Pages 1 & 2. Mine was built May 15. 2 days after the other GSX. Guessing the number of GSX sold new in Canada, I use a rule of thumb of 5% of total. When I asked the folks at Vintage Certification for the number, I was told they could go thru their files and look for all cars with that option code but they would need to be paid by the hour to do it.
Randy the 285 # is the total number of hardtop 1970 Buick GS 455 , GS Stage 1 and GSX's combined that were sold/ delivered new in Canada in 1970. I have always speculated that of that 285 # 35 were 1970 GSX's, 90 were 1970 GS Stage 1 's hardtops, and balance of 155 were 1970 GS 455 hardtops. Very rare cars spread out over the entire huge nation of Canada, that when these cars were brand new back in the early 1970's, you would be lucky to see any of these cars once every 6 months.
At least 6 GSX'S came out our way new to dealers in 1970. Two of them went to a dealer 5 minutes away from us. A white one and a yellow one. Identically optioned Stage 1 non AC cars, except one was yellow one was white. A cousin bought the yellow one brand new. And travelled back and forth to NYC while working on the WTC. I saw it practically every Friday night. This is the car Duane owns, has had for decades. It is the low 11 second stock appearing GSX that ran Nick's Garage HEMI 'Cuda in round three Stage 1 VS Hemi shoot out. We tracked down the white one and bought it. But ended up letting the white one go. We did get the GM Canada documentation for both cars. They did not arrive at the dealer at the same time. The white one was one of the last GSX'S built. Both were STAGE 1.
The earlier versions of these reports were actually more interesting as it also contained a picture of the microfiche page that contained your car, with all the options listed as option codes plus same for about 8 or 9 other cars. It also included key codes etc and apparently people were using this extra info for bad things so now they decode the info for you and put it on a nice sheet, plus usually some other documentation as well (AMA specifications). Also used to cost 10.00...
This is an example of the picture of the microfiche included in the older reports that TimR references. This particular sheet is part of a GM Canada report from 1989 on my 1969 Corvette. I put a piece of paper over the VIN listing portion on this sheet for the reason TimR refers to above. Apparently, they would copy the relevant page right off of the microfiche reader and in red ink, circle your VIN and draw lines above and below the listed option codes.
Thanks for posting that, I was in the process of scanning mine (in which the VIN was circled in red and that's it). It's too bad in 71 and 72 model numbers don't break down engine size like 70 did, be curious to see.... 1971 was 383 GS coupes (model 43437) and 72 was 360 GS coupes (model 4G37). Would like to see the actual number from GM for 70 small block GS coupes, if anyone has it let me know.
