The glovebox hinge is broken on my 64 Electra. classicbuicks.com used to sell a repair kit for this but unfortunately it is no longer available.. Does anybody know of another place to buy one, or offer suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks!
I haven't met a '64 Fullsize yet that had both hinges intact. Seemed to be a real common problem. If anyone knows of the existance of this kit, I would like to know too. :Comp:
I'm glad I'm not alone.... :beer It's odd that with all the metal parts used in the dash they would decide to use plastic for the hinge mounting.... ou:
how close are the 61's electras. there is one by me in the yard. i aslso have axcess to a 62 and a 58
Only a 63 or 64 glovebox area would work in our situation. 62 and before is a different design, 65 and above is a different design.
This sounds like an opportunity for someone with fabricating skills..... which unfortunately, I don't have.
Dan, Take a close look at how yours is broken, and let me know. If ours are broken the same way and I can come up with a bracket, I can let you know. Here is how at least three of mine I have owned over the years broke: The glovebox door and its hinge have no issue and nothing is broken on that side. Where the glovebox hinge mounts to the cut out dash area, the dash area breaks. I think this is because of the tension of the springs pf the glove box door, and the very weak plastic to which the hinges are mounted. I figure a bracket, like a slice of metal, that went up the whole side of the opening and was epoxied or fastened to the plastic might dissapate the force from the hinge over a wide enough area to not break anything. Please let me know how yours is broken and that may help with a mutual solution. It may be the end of September before I can look at mine, as it has been holed up at the body shop with window leaks since July
That sounds like how mine is broken ( from memory ) but I'll confirm this weekend..... maybe even take some photos.
Here is mine. Notice on this side there is a big chunk of plastic missing. I am thinking if I take some thin sheet metal, and sandwich a strip of each side of the plastic it might hold up to the force of the spring. I think the inside piece would need to be an L shape to extend onto the other section for force distribution.
Here is the other side. While it is all there, there are two hairline cracks, one from the switch hole to the hinge slot, and then one starting where the recessed part meets the flush part. I am thinking one metal plate, on the back that makes an L and meets the flush part of the dash would stand up to normal use.
Wow, it's like i'm looking at mine. I have the same exact chunk missing. I would like to know where to get a fix as well.
