Gears sound funny in 79 Lesabre

After driving my car for a while.... for about 20 minutes on the highway. Once on the city streets, shifting gears sounds like klanking. Just wondering waht this might be. The tranmission fluid is like clear, which was my first thought of changing it. But I called a mechanic and he said that it would cause more trouble than it's worth. The oil is due for a change in about 200 miles. But i can't think of anything else. BTW, the Engine light comes on and flickers with the engine sound. Just need some help so I don't ruin my baby. Thanks, pLuRR.

    Brad,
What makes you think it has anything to do with your transmission? You say the engine light comes on when you hear the noise. Do you mean the oil light? If so, you may have low oil pressure. You do not want to drive the car like that until you find out why. Have you checked the oil level? That's the first thing I would do. You may just have a worn engine or bad oil pump. As the oil heats up when you drive, it thins out, and your oil pressure will normally drop. Going to a heavier weight oil may help. It may not. What kind of engine are we talking about?

Well, I went to go get the oil changed and the mechanics said there were some oil leaks. So I've got to get that fixed. Not sure what I'm going to do. Anyone got any good ideas for fixing oil leaks?? Thanks for all your help. pLuRR

    Where's it leaking at?

When I looked under it, there was a bunch of oil coming from the drain hole on the oil chamber. But lately the Engine light just hangs when I'm idled at a stop light. Not flickering anymore. So the oil must be changed because when I turn the car off, it smells a bit. Anyway, that's about it. THanks

If the engine light is staying on, it's time to stop driving it.

Throw a large piece of cardboard under the car, to help pinpoint any other leaks.
