I have been looking for a gear drive set-up to replace the old roller chain on my 350. Does anybody have any idea of who might sell one? Mildon and Edelbrock said no. Probably don't make one.

why in the world would you want a gear drive??? I heard they make alot of noise....

no chain to deal with, easy to advance/retard timing (but in big degrees probably), can't be that noisy

It is very noisy... to the point that nobody will miss it when you arrive. And in my opinion it isn't one of those 'nice' mechanical noises... it's just a loud noise.

Sounds like a blower whine from the engine...its cool for the first day or 2, but after that its down right annoying

I see some (Pete Jackson) that are advertised as "quiet". I always thought they were blowers when they drive by! Someone also makes a belt drive.... Try Summit 800 230 3030, although I doubt they have anything for Buicks! Does anyone have one on a 455? Comments?

    i stand corrected, thanks

wouldn;t the belt be more prone to stretching than a double roller chain? my thought was that the gear drive would keep you cam timing in the same spot over a longer period of time vs. a chain.

wonder if there is a difference in the bearings (needle vs. ball maybe) in the ones advertised as "quiet"

Pete Junkson drives aren't quiet to begin with, and the "noisy" one is simply a "pre-worn" set, with looser idler center shaft positioning. I'd bet they came up with that "noisy" ident after having so many center idler sets come way out of tolerance in initial manufacture, and they had to find a way not to lose money on them.

The Buick 350 engine should be the same as an even fire V6 as far as timing chain sets and gear drives, so timing chain/sprocket parts should interchange between themselves.

Now, as far as a gear drive type, if anyone comes up with a dual idler, run for your life, run away, they are junk, as in Pete Junkson. If you absolutely, positively want to mess the engine up with a gear drive, use the single idler ones, the ones that plate mount the idler gear to the block, not ones with two floating idler gears.

I don't think there are dual idler sets for our Buicks, and that would be a plus for us, unavailable.

The Buick 350 would use the same timing system as the earlier ODD fire V6 (pre `78), not the later, EVEN fire (`78+).

I stand corrected, but still, a single idler gear drive is available for odd and even fire V6, so...for the 350 as well.
