gauges

Just replaced factory fuel gauge/idiot lights with gauge package (fuel, oil pressure, engine temp) and although the gauges appear to work fine, there are two problems I believe my be related. First, on the back of the new gauges there is a "male" plug for a wire to attach, but I have no idea what it is for. I thought maybe for a ground wire but when I ran one and attached to car body, there was no change in anything.
Second, my dash lights aren't working anymore, which sounds like a ground problem itself.
When I took the old gauge out, it had a wire running from the attaching screw (upper right corner) to the dash, which I guess was some sort of ground, but when I try to duplicate this, nothing happens with the lights.
So...Is the male plug on back of gauge used, and if so, how? Is the gauge grounded separate than through the wiring harness (with pigtail adapter),and if so how? Any other thoughts/suggestions? Thanks....Matt

Just passed through Florence recently with one of our GS cars. I have many good friends down there that I have worked with over the years Kendall Few and Jim Anders --just to name a couple. Ever go to the Spring Myrtle Beach show?

Jim, Been awhile since I've been to the spring car show as it has recently been held the same weekend as the Spring race at Darlington, and I'm involved in some of the race activities at the "Track Too Tough To Tame".
I don't know Kendall (met him before) But I have known Anders for years... I worked for him in the prosecutor's office in Columbia fro a few years before moving on. He's a great guy and a damn fine lawyer.
