At the end of the fuel line located just on the passenger side of the radiator the steel tubing is flared with a brass fitting. The tubing appears to be 5/16. Between the end of the tubing and the Fuel Pump there is about 9 inches of empty space. I looked in the Service Manual and all that is said is "The Fuel Line is connected to the Fuel Pump by a Rubber Hose which provides the Flexibility required by movement of the Engine on its Rubber Mountings". The Service Manual also mentions a Fuel Filter whch I can't seem to locate. Should a Fuel Filter along with a Rubber Hose be located between the end of the Fuel Line and the Fuel Pump? The Manual does not provide any Illustrations and/or diagrams.
I recently purchased from Bob's Automobilia an all year Glass Bowl fuel filter with a pot metal base that is threaded at either end of the inlet and outlet along with a paper filter with a turn buckle type thumb screw at the top. It seems to be too heavy to connect that and a rubber hose between the line and pump.
Can ANYONE help me out. Fuel lines are not something to "mickey mouse" or make a temporary fix.
Thanking YOU for YOUR cooperation in advance.

Tom, the fuel filter should be between the fuel pump and the carb. The correct one for a 2-bbl is a round disk shape the goes directly into the carb and the other end goes to the hard pipe from the pump. The line from the fuel tank hard pipe to the pump is a special braided rubber hose with fittings on each end.

RE: 1956 Buick Fuel Filter Question

Thank YOU, Roberta for your Valued Information. YOU were able to Clarify a few mis-nomers. A fellow co-worker, who worked as a mechanic at a Buick Dealership for 14 years was able to provide me with an Illustration/ Diagram from an old Chiltons manual that You so eloquently expressed in YOUR E-mail. I THANK YOU for YOUR Support.
