Well my skylark motor is finally done and running like a champ! Just thought id post a thread letting everyone know that fuel injection is not hard and very fun. I used a holley commander 950 system on my skylark and it was basically a drop in system. Everything was bolt on and go with the exception of a few power wires and a tach signal wire. If anyone would like any info and pics of the kit on my car and how i set it all up just let me know. Thanks, Nick
Congratulations. I used to have a throttle body FI system on my 455, then in 2001 I changed to a port FI system. In all honesty, I don't think a port system is really any better than the throttle body injection. The biggest difference was just the level of control (from the computer), but from what I hear just about every controller (including the Commander) nowadays is capable of great tuning. -Bob C.
$1300 sounds reasonable - not sure 670 cfm is enough for even the 350. Is the motor basically stock? How's it run Nick? - Bill
The performance over a carb is unreal. Where carbs bog out at times and have flat spots under different conditions this efi setup does not. I have a basically stock motor besides a 260h comp cam kit, ported heads, and the usual performance exhaust setup. My kit is the 700cfm kit and it hauls butt!!! I have been tuning it for about a month and to tell you the truth everyday i drive the car i love it more and more. Adjustability is unlimited... if it idles to rough you can fix that, if it takes alittle too long to start when cold you can fix that, if it runs at 13:1 air fuel ratio and you want 12.5:1 you can fix that! It allows you to control every aspect of the motor without ever giving you problems and all at the tips of your fingers while driving down the road even! I think the best part is getting in my car in the morning and not having to hit the gas pedal 6 times to start it. The fuel pump primes for 4.9 seconds and it fires right up. I will post pics tomorrow, I just spent all day swapping out my th350 for a new race prepped 200-4r. Thanks, Nick
Well thats where i lucked out, i found a used kit on craigslist locally. Guy wanted $350 for the kit and it came with everything like it was off the show room floor. After installing it i quickly figured out why a wide band O2 was so important and picked one of those up for $300. So my cost was only $650, the total cost of the kit would be about $1500 and then an additional $300 for the wide band O2. For 1500 the kit is a complete bolt on swap, it includes everything you need for install down to the clamps and tie wraps. The kit comes with a narrow band O2 so dont think you need to buy extra stuff, i just had the additional funds for it.
That wide band stuff is so pricy still but very nice. Im still using a 2 wire on my FI car even though 3 wire is cheap now. [loop mode does suck while ya wait for a signal.] The next upgrade in tech will be a mega wide band, 1 in each primary tube at $500 each x8
Sounds like a good deal to me, i wouldnt mind running an egt probe in each primary. keeps tabs on each cyclinder.
I always wonder if one of those would work on our motors. Not a bad price. The more you know the more money you blow. LOL Tim
