Hey guys I'm not sure if this the right spot to post this, but here goes. I've got a Fuel Injected BBB that will be going in my car soon and I need to upgrade my fuel tank. I'm looking for feedback about either sumping my stock tank or replacing it with a fuel cell. A little back round, planned mid 11 sec, possibly high 10, 71 Skylark. Fuel Injected and small shot of nitrous 100-125 shot. Nitrous will have standalone fuel system with 1-2 gallon cell under hood(race gas). Main tank will run pump 93. I'm also unsure of wheather or not I should go with 1/2" line vs 3/8s line. I'm leaning toward 3/8s due to fuel injected and it shouldn't ever need to be able to flow more then 600hp worth of NA power. Which ever fuel line I go with will be NEW aluminum. Thanks for any help/advice.
I like the look of a stock tank with the sump 3/8 line is fine but i try to do it once so 4 me 1/2 is the only way.You can have 2 fuel outlets on your sump one for motor the other n2o and just add race fuel @ the track. You don't need a separate fuel for a small shot but it does look cool.I have two outlets on mine and was going to use it for a n20 fuel system as i had the old one anyway.the fuel cell can take up valuable trunk space as well. I agree. I run a sumped stock tank for "stock appearing" classes I run. I run 1/2 lines. I'm carbureted and run those times. I had my sump made for me and used -12 AN fittings welded on. Most kits have -10. As for the trunk space, I needed during Drag Week. David
I've got fuel pump issues and wondering what the pick-up is like inside the tank. Is there a screen that can get blocked? Is the access like most tanks where you rotate the pick-up 1/3 turn and the whole thing come out in one piece. I also need to be adding 1/2" pick-up tube, any ideas? Tanks!
I hate my Fuel Pump under the car,In harm's way.They're too expensive to leave hanging under there. I like a Fuel Cell in the trunk w/ the Filter and Pump as well!
Thanks guys keep the suggestions coming. I think I like the idea of the cell and pump in the trunk, hadn't thought of that one. I need to take some measurements and see how much trunk space I'd like to give up.
Before Rob made those gorgous pieces, I had to fab my own sending unit with 1/2 in copper line brazed to the steel mounting plate. Next car gets one of Rob's sweet pick ups!!!!!
Sump, 2 holley 140 black pumps, 2 seperate switches relayed. 2 Moroso 40 micron filters, -8 braided line from the sump up to the regulater. I probably should use -10 line from sump to the pumps but see no need to do that yet. Both lines feed the 980 holley, the 2 lines go in to a Y-block at the rear bumber pass. side frame and feed one -8 line to the front reg. Theres no Nitrous on this car. I wanted to keep my trunk space so I did it this way and tucked everything as high as possible for safety. Ones opinion; o No: Click on picture of rear of car;
Gary, I agree with you that having it underneath lets it get dirty and could possibly let it get damaged by something on the track or falling off the car. Again having it in the trunk with the batteries and the possibility of a leak and filling up that area concern me too. I have seen some neat installations with everything in the trunk. If it is a serious car I would go to a cell and at least 1/2" line. Jim N.
Any suggestions on which setup would be safer, with fiberglass bumper out back? I'm thinking cell in the trunk.
If youre running a fiberglass bumper, in the trunk would probably be safer especially street driving it or even at the track. Ive never really worried to much about my setup and I see alot more street time than strip time with my car. In any event that are cars would get rear ended, we hope its not hard enough to break a pump or line and spill gas and ignite it, ethier in the trunk or on the ground. Theres also a chance of losing control at the track and smashing the rear against the wall. Its a gamble we all take.
With my sumped tank, my pump and relays are all in the trunk. Relays are where the right hinge swings down and the pump/filter is tucked under the edge of the roll bar where a spare would ride. With the roll bar being there, wasn't much else I could use the space under it for. To the post above with fuel pump problems, if you are using a stock setup there is a screen. Sumped tanks and fuel cells do not, at least not to my knowledge. Jim at Trishield Performance modified my stock pick up to a -8 AN fitting and I ran that for a long time. Still uses stock fuel sender, very nice. I still have it in the car for a fuel sender and as my return line. I would check with him on that. David
Nice Mod grabbed these shots off a che*y page. i just looked real quick and closed the link. i'm not thinking about putting a BBC in my car.
