I am going with a set of Edelbrock wheels on my 72 convertible. What is standard backspacing for the front wheels (15x7's)?
I was going to go with 15x7's in the front with 235/70/15 BFG TA's and 15x8's in the rear with 275/60/15's. Edelbrock only offers 4" backspacing for the 7" rims and 4.5" on the 8" wide rims. Should I be OK? Also, both front and rear tires are 28" tall, should I be OK with that as well?
I have checked the archives on this subject and see many differing opinions. If someone is using a similar set up (tire/rim sizes) on the 70-72, I would love to see pictures.

    Thanks all!

Paul, your gonna be close with those 275/60/15s on 8" rims in the back. I run that tire on a 7" factory rim and I have about 1/2" on both sides from the inner tire to the frame rail. I'm not sure, but a 4.5" backspace may be trouble for you.:Do No:

    ??

Do you think I need more backspacing that 4.5" on the rear 8" rims? or is it too much tire? I didn't think I would have a problem with the rears...I thought the fronts might be the problem. Suggestions Al?
    thanks as always...

I have 275/60/15's polyglass on 8" wide rims for racing...the fit fine, but for everday driving I have the same set-up as you Al 275/60/15's on 7" rims. I dont know the front spacing, all I know is that I have 7" wide rims for the front with 235/60/15's and that is as wide as I can go without binding the tires. The combo also looks great (nice meat in the front, huge meat out back) plus, gives my Skylark a raised rear stance (about an 1"to 1.5" raised in the back VS. the front). The only problem I have is a spongy feeling going around turns at first from the rear, but you get the hang of it fast. Hope some of this helps, if you wanna get the back spacing for the front, I would assume it would be the same as a stock wheel if your going for a 15x7 for the front.

    Hope this helps :TU:

    Paul,
You will be fine with 4-1/2" backspacing on the rear wheels. I have 15x8 Weld Draglites with 4-1/2"bs and I run 28x11.50 ET Streets and have no rubbing at all. I also have a set of Weld ProStars with the same bs with 275-60-15's with no mods to the wheel lip. I am not 100% sure about the bs on the front wheels. Maybe someone can measure the back spacing on a 15x7 road wheel for you. I think you will be ok.

i agree. my 15x8's have 4 1/8 all around and my 235's have plenty or room to breath. the inside is way open on the back, and i'm confident that there's room enough on the outside for a 275 tire, as well.

I'm running 275/60R15 DragRadials on 15x8 Buick rallyes with 4.5 backspacing on the rear of my convertible. I have 1.5" clearance to the frame rail and about 1.25" clearance to the wheel well lip. Lots of room. That tire is 28" tall.

On the front I am running 245/60R15, 26.6" diameter, on a factory 15x7 rims which have 4" backspacing. I also lowered the car 1" in the front so the wheel well lip is right at the top of the tire. It looks great. The tire does barely rub the 1.25" sway bar I put on, but I do mean barely, and just on the passenger side and only when wheel is fully turned that way.

Sorry I don't have a digital camera to take pics, but you should have no problems at all with what you want to do.

I'm going to try and fit 325/50 DragRadials on my rear on 15x10 Buick rallyes with 5" backspacing. I did a lot of measuring and am hoping that they will fit with no modifications. I'll be posting as soon as I get them on, hopefully this weekend.

Paul, one thing I forgot to mention about the Welds. They aren't clear coated, so figure on polishing them fairly often. I think I would prefer a clear coated rim if I went back to aftermarket rims. Just something to think about :Do No:
