Would like to know if anyone would know the weight of a steel 1972 front fender . w/o inner well just the bare fender . reason for asking ,thinking of putting fiberglass and want to see if weight savings is worth cost.
Steve If you can wait I can weigh one this weekend,I'll let you know if noone responds by then, talk soon,Gary
Ask for hood too... VFN says that the steel hood will be too much for the Glass fenders. But I am also thinking about going your route so I would like to know the results too:gt: Thanks Jeff
Gary i can wait would appreciate if you could do that . Madcat i am using a fiberglass hood now its the bolt on with springs vfn told me it would be ok with the fenders but i should ask for street weight when i order the fenders . They said that {street weight} would add one more layer of glass to strengthen them . i also dont use strong springs i use a hood prop they recomended not using strong springs.
How much weight did the Hood save you. I havent gone this route yet but it looks real appealing....
Madcat , i think it was around 60 lbs its been awhile so i dont remember exactly but i do know that the combined savings of the hood and glass bummper was 100 lbs together . also i used the glass bummper from i think {dave mongeon in canada}its heck getting old! not vfn. it fits the 72 car without changing everything to 70.Plus it is alot stronger ,nice peice prob a little heavier than vfn but worth it.
lighter than I thought... Hey Steve The fender only weighed 33lbs. I would've guessed more like 50lbs but it was a little lighter...I would say you MIGHT save 40lbs on a pair of fiberglass fenders. Are you coming to Norwalk in May?
NORWALK 1st weekend in May,the event is growing every year,I think they've turned it into a 3 day thing rather than just the 1 day it used to be,talk to you later
Give or take regarding the scale you use, my factory GS hood weighed 85 pounds compared to a fiberglass GS hidgable hood that weighed 35 pounds. (hinges not included on the weights). I can remember a little way back I compared the bolt on fiberglass fenders to the steel fenders and the weights were close, not enogh for me to discard the steel and repaint and prep the glass ones. Though if I had to start from scratch I would get the bolt on glass ones. Not the fenders that are fastened on are definately lighter, also the lift off flat glass hood weighs about 15 pounds. As for the hidged glass hood you need ligter springs or you can hook up those gas liftgate shocks. Rick Martinez
On my glass hood from VFN I used door springs from home depot the fit great and hold the open well in the full open position. You will need to lower the hood to close it as the springs will not hold the weight while closing. The springs are $10each but work great. I am looking into a set of glass fenders for my skylark. Does anyone have a good working knowlege as to the quality and durability.
