I have a dilema. I need to put a new 9" drop in in my 79 Ford f-100. I would like to get the new rear end before taking everything apart, so I can get it done nice and quick and clean. However, how do I know if I have 28 splines or 31? Is there a way to find out without tearing into it and counting teeth?
I don't know of a way to tell for certain. Since a 9" dosen't have C - clips it is easy to pull an axle and count the splines. Just pull one wheel and drum, take off the 4 nuts on the axle retainer, and yank the axle.
