Floor Pan Plugs

I just want to make sure before I install them wrong. The plugs that go in the floor pans inside and in the trunk are installed with the raised end up....correct? The reason I ask, the originals I took off seem to have the sound deadner material on the bottom; and one of them had a silicone type adhesive on the raised side as if it was glued in place with the "hat" down. I could have been taken off and reinstalled way back when, and just put in wrong. I am about to paint the trunk and don't want to have to redo it.

    Thanks.

Good one!!! I've seen it both ways but I prefer with the "hat" down, ie, it sits in the hole. Thats how 90% of the cars I have seen were, also it becomes the low point for mositure (a good thing, its easy to replace), also if you put it the other way aorund, there is a fair gap in there due to the way the edges are rolled to catch and hold crap and moisture from the bottom...no thanks.

I don't think there is a "wrong" or a "right" in this case.

    Just my opinion.

All the ones I have found in the cars I have worked on, parted out or found in the yards is "hat up" If you look closely, you will see 4 "nibs" that are on the bottom side of the "hat" that makes the plug sit slightly up, about 1/16" from the floor pan hole. I don't understand what the purpose of the "nibs" is if you put it "hat down" so that means to me that "hat up" is correct. You can verify with the Buick God "Duane" for his answer.

Did I hear my name Mentioned?

    Len,
George is right, the plugs go in with the raised section facing up. Otherwise when the floor pans got wet, they would fill up with water and rust out.

    PS. George,
Thanks for the plug but I am not the "Buick God", maybe an apostle, but not a god. I have a few friends that know more about this stuff then I do, they are just more "quiet" about it then me. See you soon.

I don't get it. I just pulled back the carpet on my stage 1, never been touched in the floorpan area, and they are hats down. Go figure.

I'd rather have those things rust out than the floorpan area around them...

Not arguing, I just know what i have seen.

Ok Duane, further references to you will be addressed as Apostle Duane.

    Tim,
I wonder if you found your build date. I bet your car was a Friday or Monday car. Someone was in a rush to leave Friday or hung-over on Monday morning during the production run! :beer :TU:

I'd buy that as it was aug 28, 1970 which I seem to recall was a friday but what about the 5 parts cars recently stripped and the untouched 71 gs 455 I did several years ago plus several other parts cars?? I think of all those, only one had the hats up that I recall (it was a skylark).

Seems odd to me. I have been unable to find any official GM info and if some judge slags me on it.....!! (actually I don't go to many shows).

Not a big deal. Got new style prop valve on the car too!! Me bad!!

Aug 28, 1970?????? Something sounds wrong there! 1970 GM had a strike so production runs were not as long. GM shuts down at the end of June or the first week of July for the model change over process in all plants. Sooooooo......Aug date seems way out of normal unless the car was a "line pulled" car for durability testing or had some other problem.

Actually it was Aug 31, 1970 (just looked) as per the body buyoff sheet (Duane has copy) Nothing wrong, car is confirmed with paperwork, it is a 71 model don't forget . The car was shipped Sept 9, 1970, so I assume it was built the same day (according to GM, my ragtop was built Sept 2, 1971 and shipped Sept 2, 1971)

You know, now I'm gonna have to pull the plugs in my ragtop trunk floor and install them again the other way around or its gonna drive me nuts. Thanks guys!!
