I have a 1966 Skylark with the wildcat 310 in it and I'm trying to start it for the first time in a long time. It turns over and I'm manualy feeding it fuel but my timing is not firing. Any help on where to set the timing for the first time to be later timed to the right spot?

Bring #1 cylinder to TDC of compression stroke. Then make sure that the rotor in your distributor is pointing to the #1 terminal on your distributor cap. This will get you in the ballpark.

First ,Do You have ign. voltage to the coil? Next, Is the coil putting out any spark, Pull the coil wire at the dist. center cap and hold it within 1/2 in of the eng block or intake and give it a whirl. You should get a nice fat blue spark. if You get a weak spark or no spark. replace the points and condensor. Set the points on .017 gap or 33 deg. of dwell. If You still get no spark suspect the coil. Replace the coil with a known good coil. Once You get a good spark thru the coil wire , check the dist cap and rotor for cracks corrosion in the wire towers and the coil tower. and carbon tracks inside the cap. [ looks like a hairline crack] Then bump the starter and see if the rotor is turning and note the direction it turns. Remove no 1 spark plug. [the one on the bank of cyls that is the most forward toward the front of the veh.] Stick Your thumb over the spark plug hole and rotate the eng. untill You feel the compression coming out of the plug hole. The eng is now coming up on no. 1 cyl on the compression stroke. by hand bring it up to top dead center. stop. now look at the rotor under the dist cap. where it is pointing is where no 1 spark plug wire is supposed to be. wire the ign. wires around the dist . cap in the direction of rotation of the rotor in the firing order on the engine. The eng should start and run at this point. next all You have to do is disconnect the vac. advance and set the timing. Put the timing light on no 1 plug wire and loosen the dist hold down bolt slightly and adjust the timing and tighten her down. Hope this helps, Doc
