Finally a race with no rice!

After killing nothing but rice all summer, I finally got an opportunity to race something worthy of racing. Tonight I take the car out for a little cruise. It's like 55* and just perfect outside. We get the usual ricers zipping up to us and then zipping away.....borrrrrring!
I decide to take one more pass down the avenue before we head home, and spot an orange 70 Olds w-30, which looked like it just came off a gravel road :eek2: . I just casually cruise by him, going maybe 38 when he is going about 35. He guns it a bit then revs the engine and throws it in low. So I leave the GS in 2nd and slow down to his speed, which is now about 30....he is just a fender ahead of me when he nails it. It was over too fast..... I just punched it and let it shift on it's own and jumped in front of him by 1 car when I hit second gear and continued to pull away. He just let off when he couldn't catch up ...... about 5 seconds.
After that run he wouldn't get next to me all the way down the avenue. I turned around at the edge of town and came back...and went home with a nice smile on my face. After eating rice all summer, I finally got a little meat on my plate. Now I don't feel so bad putting the cover on the car for the winter!

I just looked...looks like it's 60 right now 11pm .... nice night for a ride though. Unfortunately also one of the last nice days I bet!

  4. Yes, I was thinking this might be a good weekend to winterize... However, my wife has to work tomorrow, so I may not get it done yet. I was off work all week except today. 75-80 all week long, light winds, clear skies. Why can't it be like this year-round? Oh yeah, winter is what keeps the riffraff out

It's kind of disturbing when you have to drive around all night to find a descent car to race. But it makes it worth while when you do find a worthy opponent!:Brow:

    Hey Mike!!

    I forgot to give you a big:TU: !!

    GO BUICK!!

It just amazes me how rare it is to find a good grudge match on the street. It seems that if I've burned one ricer, I've burned 10,000 ricers. I am kind of loosing interest on the whole rice deal. Only worthy competition can make a true grudge match and it seems there is less of it each year.

Now a good OLDS kill is rare. I've seen maybe two Oldmobubbles between Pittsburgh and Youngstown regularly on the street. Just not alot of action from those dudes. Even the Chevy dudes are starting to turn out to be washers and waxers. They go to the car cruise and then they go straight home. Finding a hemi is like finding a needle in a haystack. Although I have spotted one on the street in Beaver County very recently. I guess I have too much down time to think about this stuff. I've torn down my 455 for another buildup. I lucked out my motor isn't blown, but this is another story.

Thanks man! Yep....it's rare that you see an Olds around here....about as rare as Buicks are I guess. Most of the "bad" Chevies around here are owned by 50 something guys now that pull em out for cruise night, then go home. I go to cruise nights here and usually still can not get any action on the ways home from anyone.

Well, good luck on the rebuild.....going with the new aluminum heads, or just a refresh? I'm all stowed away and ready for winter now........ 5 months until cruise weather again.

I had some crazy stuff happen and I am still breathing a big sigh of relief. From what I heard the last time I fired up my motor.........it sounded just like a rod. I yanked the motor and tore it down. I didn't find any abnormal wear. No major problems, bearings were good. Not one was showing any copper. The only thing I can attribute the noise to is a bolt that was out two threads between the torque converter and the flywheel. I have yet to hear this happen to anyone else and still am a bit wary of the whole situation. One bolt with no loctite is probably what did me in. :Dou: I'll be extra careful the next time around.

In any respect, the motor (1971 455)is apart, so I'm going to move on from here. This is what I have done on the first rebuild:
    TA 10:1 cast pistons
Kenny Bell high volume oil pump
    TA112 cam
    TA grooved cam bearings
    5/8" Oil pickup tube
    Edelbrok performer intake
    factory HEI

New bearings is first on the list. I should get my crank checked out just in case. If its OK, I'll get it chamfered. I used TA112 cam the first time around. I want to bump up. I haven't decided to what yet. I'm not going to worry about streetability as much this time around. I've definitely need more head work. My 71 heads valve guides are probably shot. A ton of carbon on top of my pistons. Aluminum heads would be very cool, but I'll settle for a good set of ported iron for the moment. I still have alot of thinking to do.

This is what I have sketched up, but my mind is still spinning from all of what has happened. I keep thinking I may have missed something very big and obvious, yet I want to keep trying to be faster and not focus on the negatives.

I have seen this happen quite a few times, and it is pretty common for these to wiggle out without the locktite on them. Do a few heat cycles on the motor and then recheck the bolts to make sure they are torqued. It's always good news to tear something down and find something simple though.

    Thanks for the advice Mike.:TU:

BTW: I check out your website........very cool. I am amazed at how flat it is out there. Holy cow, every back road can be a drag strip!! :jd:
