This is not a story about beating another Hemi but I believe it is worth sharing. My friend and I have been traveling the show car circuit for the past 3 months. He has a 70 Hemi Cuda (Documented) and I have my 72 Stage 1 (It's a real stage 1 but heavily modified). We always tried to get the cars side by side at the shows but it does not always happen. We were at a show this past weekend in Edmonton,AB. The two cars finally got to share a 20X20 space. Plum crazy and Silver mist muscle side by side. As usual the Hemi always got most of the attention but during the second day of the show as we were both cleaning the cars, two teenagers walked by and stopped. One of the kids said "well there they are, the hemi and the stage one, these are the two cars that battled back and forth for king of the hill during the muscle car years." We both over heard that and could not believe that those words were coming from a teenager. The main reason I got into showing Buicks was to raise their exposure, to over hear a comment like that made my day. I will always believe a Buick will smoke a Hemi but that day it did not matter. The fact that the two cars are still folk lore and the younger generation recognize that makes it all woth while.

For the record, I have to let the Hemi fire up first when we leave because he can't hear if the Hemi running when the Stage one idling.

That is relly cool when ya hear a youngin recognise the tru order of things.
I was shocked in the same manner by going thru the hardee's drive thru one day.
Lil 15 yr old kid asked if my 69 skylark custom was a Stage1 GS ...
I giggled and replied "I WISh!" Then stopped and thought about it..
People my own age that concider themselves car buffs don't even know what a stage 1 gs is. This 15 yr old kid new more about Buicks than I did.
He said 70's were wicked fast but he felt they should've kept the body folds on the sail panels.. I just about adopted this kid. even with his hair-lip.:bla: :bla: :bla:

but don'f forget that (most) teens also think anything form america is slow and has bad handling
but it sure is fun to hear
even i made some guy's familiar with muscle cars ( i'm only 20 ) and a friend of mine now want's a 71 roadrunner or GTX. mission accomplished

most older people are quitte surprised over here ( europe ) when i talk with them the about cars that are older than me

but i just don't like most new cars
they could never compare with say a 7o GSX or a hemi cuda even if there faster they ( for me ) will never be better looking :3gears:

    Greetings Lennard

Most young people think that new american cars are slow and can't handle? I have never heard this before, ever. Lol. By the way I'm 18 and I know a little about buicks. What bugs me is that my roomate thinks he's a car genius and I had to show tell him that buick mad fast cars let alone him knowing what a special is. He has and 93 teg and loved it until he raced my daily driver. 93 olds ciera s and he couldn't even pull away. Only beat me by half a lenght and his car was fast. Then he pulled the "well at least mine handles better" and then I beat him there too. His still handles better, he just left his balls at home that day.

I think it has alot to do with family. I can remember my Father telling me stories of racing his 1967 Firebird 400 and as a little kid it got me interested in cars. ( I am only 27 now ) .

I know that here in Kansas City about 99.9% of the younger population has taken on the " Fast and Furious " life style with imports with loud pineapple shooters and huge wings and such, but every now and then if you give a ride or race one of these goofy imports you can show a few " the light".

I can only hope that by the time Im old enough to have children of my own that they will still know what a REAL " Muscle Car " is.

Good stories by the way ! :beer

i have to agree i feel it has alot to do with family , the types of friends we grew up with and what was sittign in our driveways and our nieghbors driveways.. I honestly feel if it wasn't for the Buicks owned by my father and his parents and my mother's parents i proball;y wouldn't have ever given them a second look.. Sometime soon I'm goin to investigate the whereabout of my great grandmothers 64 wildcat 4 door that my knucklehead parents sold when i was 8.. It will be found!

Most teen agers know more about Buicks than older, so called musclecar buffs because they weren't around in the era to never hear about a Buick being quick. Still scare the crap out of ricers though, they have no idea whats going on when they see that Buick scream by them.

A similar thing happened to me at a local show 3 weeks ago. I was listening to 2 teenage guys talking about my 71 Buick GS. One was discussing how the Stage 1 was in the top 5 fastest cars of American history at one point and then said it had more torque than any other factory car other than Caddy. That was cool to hear from a very young guy and especially in Cheby territory.

Our company imports machinery from German, Sweden and Finland, so I have an opportunity to talk cars with people from over there quite often. One of our supplier's next door neighbor (Finland) has a 72 Riv he bought out of Canada, and is inthe process of getting another one from someone here in the states.

Last week our supplier in Sweden called so we could here one of his friend's GTO revving up in the background.

My German contacts said the small villages around his area have the equivilent of "cruise night" every so often to show off the big American iron.

Appearently, overseas, the muscle car and classic car passion is alive and well. Think of all the next generation of europeans that could be influenced by all that iron!

That looks like the the area around the Radium Hot Springs, I was at last year's show and had a blast. I was with the hooligans in the SVT group, we parked at the back of the show because we were so hung over, lol.
