If the famous and very sought after buick 455 is really a 401 cu. in. are all other buick engines known of in the same fashion? meaning is a 425 bigger in cub's than a 455?. And when you bore out a 455 30 over what exactly is the cub. size being that it is a 401?or am I totally of base.? Luis

You are in the right church but the wrong pew.

The 445 on the air cleaner for a 401 cid engine is its torque rating . The 465 on the air cleaner decal for a 425 cid engine is its torque rating.

The 455 cid on the air cleaner for a 455 engine is its cubic inch diplacement ( Actually it is closer to 456 than 455 cid ) . The 401 and 425 engines are realted to each other but neither is related to a 455 engine. The 401 cid and 425 cid engines were last made for the 66 model year. The 455 cid engines were made for 70-76 model years.

    A 455 bored 30/1000" is about 462 cid and a bore of 38/1000 " results in about 464 cid.

Team buick specifies that 455's are in reallity 401 cubic in and that the 455 was the torque rating, and that the 425 had a 465 sticker, should i move further in the back of the church? I am catholic:TU:

Someone slid back out the front door and must be getting the sermon from the parking lot.

I am unsure who Team Buick is but if they said that they were mistaken.

The 401 /425 "nailhead" generation of engines are totally unrelated to the 430 /455 line of Buick engines. Nothing transfers except for the fact that they both V8s. The parts do not interchange and the architecture is totally different.

I am not talking about nailheads but rather the 455's that we love! what is the cubic in. of a 1970-1976 455 buick engine is it a 401 cu. in. block or a 455 cub. in. block? Luis

    455.6 cid

    Buick 401cid engines were made 1959 -1966.

    staged70 RIP

The CID of a 70 and newer 455 Buick is 455. The problem is Team Buick is stuck in the oldies when Buick put their torque ratings on the air breather not the engine size. Moving forward all 400/430 and 455 Buicks are similar and have the CID on the breathers. Look at some of the early cars in members rides. You will see they say Wildcat 445 or 465 on the breather. These engines are called nailheads and have nothing at all to do with the engines we are discussing . Rest assured that a 455 is a 455 and a .030 455 is a 462 and a .038 like Jim said is a 464. This info is solid and you must realize that Team Buick whomever that is must be making a typo because they did not make a 455 before 1970 in CID or Torque. Just know that you get the correct info here .

I am unsure who Team Buick is

"Team Buick" is the forum side of Buicks.net, there are also "Team Chevelle" and i believe a couple of other "Team" forums who are loosely affiliated.

rcull is migrating all of his reference materials from Buicks.net into TeamBuick.com, i wouldn't be surprised if he eventually lets the .net domain lapse. but he hasn't said anything specific to me about this.

If the famous and very sought after buick 455 is really a 401 cu. in.

you both misread and misunderstood what was posted. here is the actual quote:
    http://www.teambuick.com/forums/view.php?pg=indent_engine
"The 445? The label on the motor refers to the torque rating, 445 ft.-lb. This was confusing to buyers when the cars were new, it is still confusing to restorers 35 years later. The engine is a 401 cid. You may also find 465 which would identify a 425 cu. in. Buick."

i highlighted the torque ratings in red. you were reading "445" as "455".

in the 60's Buick named their engines by the torque rating rather than the cubic inches. you will find all of the Nailheads labeled like this and, i think, the first couple of years of the Big Blocks.

in the late 60s/early 70s Buick switched to the more normal CI naming convention for their labels and this is what you will find on almost all Big Block Buick engines. in other words they will be 'correct'.

one other note that might confuse you; the 401ci Nailhead was referred to as a "400"ci engine when it was installed in the mid-size 1966 or earlier Skylarks/GSs. this is a standard 401ci Nailhead, Buick was just 'rounding down' because of a GM corporate policy which forbade any engine over 400 cubic inches in a mid size car. so Buick labeled it a "400" and everybody winked and nodded and looked the other way.

this corporate policy was dropped by GM in 1970 which is why you suddenly were seeing 455 and 454 ci engines all over the place in mid size cars.
