If you want straight noise, then run the bullets only. Thats what i have on my 470. It's loud- I'm not sure how they even qualify as mufflers..

No, I’m not sharing what I spent, on the grounds that it may insinuate that I am not to be trusted with a credit card that earns Amazon points.

I’ve redeemed quite a few points to buy what I’ve added to the exhaust.

As for time and effort, I’m in a deficit situation, but the end is in sight. I hope.

It won’t be silent, or Caddy-quiet. I’m anticipating that there’ll still be some indication that it’s not stock, just in a polite, reserved, and refined way.

There’s a trend I’ve noticed where some high-dollar European sedans are being fitted with obnoxious aftermarket exhausts. Why anyone would want their Mercedes to sound like a riced-out Honda with a fart can is beyond me.

    I prefer Silent but Deadly

    I hear ya!
My 3 chamber Flowmaster system drives me nuts on 35 mile long e-way trips. I have to turn the stereo up so much I feel like I'm at a rock concert.:D

I do not want straight-through noise.
I do not like such noisy toys.
I do not like a loudmouth car.
I do not like them, near or far.
I like them to be fairly subtle.
I like to stay away from trouble.

Can I interest you in a six-pack of mufflers? It’ll preserve your hearing and sanity, and make driving more pleasant.

Naw, the stereo really kicks it out! Like you, I was trying all different pipes/muffs/ pipe dia's, before my welder friend died of asthma. Getting tired of crawling under the car.
My Z06 has a very nice tone. It's the damn road noise in that one. Low pro tires suck.
You sound determined tho, pandaoras box.

    Sorry about your friend.

I’m tired of crawling onto my creeper under my car. I have a QuickJack so at least it’s not too big a deal to get it lifted so I can work under it. The longer I spend under there the more things I see that need fixing. I put this car together myself in 1995. In ‘95 I had no internet, no online shopping. Just a Year One catalog and no money to buy anything. So I did only what it needed to run and drive well. Mostly it sat parked in my garage for the better part of the last 14 years. There’s a lot that needs doing. At least now I have a few bucks.

The pandora’s boxes are expensive, and the rabbit holes are deep. Deeper than my pockets.

Something that occurred to me is the fact that I’ve been chasing away a noise I probably wouldn’t be able to hear that much with the top down. On a car that would rarely be used with the top up.

I’ll have to mention this to my therapist next week. I know for sure resurrecting this car has been a distraction from other troublesome things I can do nothing about, because at least I can do something about the outcome of this car.

But I digress… this car will sound great someday soon. To passersby, since I won’t hear it over the wind noise.

Just healthy sound without backfire, otherwise everyone will think a 20 yr old kid is at the wheel....
And take that therapist money and buy car parts!:D That's your therapy!:)

I have some clamp loosening and aligning to do, but the exhaust is together.

I started her up and the loudest noise in the garage was coming from under the hood. The fan and engine drown out the exhaust.

From inside the car, I revved it and held RPMs at about 1600 and there was a small amount of harmonics starting to go on, barely a drone, but I think when the car is on the ground and outside it’ll hardly be noticeable. The worst of the drone that kicked in at 1700-2100 RPM (common during around town cruising) is gone.

Revs sound pretty good from in the car. Quiet. Haven’t heard revs from behind the car yet. Need an assistant. But idle is a low mellow rumble.

The shiny stainless ultra quiet resonators are sitting along side the tank and exiting just under the bumper. You can see them. At least they’re shiny. They don’t look too bad.

I could probably shorten the tailpipes to get the resonator bodies behind the bumper a little more, stand the ovals up into that pocket between the quarter and the tank but that’d mean they’d slip on to less pipe before the pipe bends toward the tank.

The Dynomax Race Bullets are up front by the trans mount crossmember. I was going to leave the ultra quiets up front and put the bullets in the back but I like that they’re easier to tuck up front than the ultra quiets. The whole system is tucked up better than before.

When I can I’ll get the car off the QuickJack and take it for a drive.

It’s almost midnight. I could probably sneak out now and nobody would notice.

    :(No joy today. Crap.

As soon as the car was on the ground and I pulled out of the garage it became obvious to me that the drone was still there and if anything it was worse.

2’ off the floor is another story.

So I extended the exits of the ultra quiet resonators out with about 7” of pipe and the drone was knocked down by 2/3rds to a level I could probably live with. But it looked ridiculous.

I took the ultra quiets off and put the elbows back on so the tailpipes exit the side like I tried earlier. Too much drone. The Dynomax race bullets are still up front and doing squat.

next move is put normal pipe from engine to muffler and put the Dynomax race bullets in the back. They’re long. Gonna see them under the bumper. They won’t look as silly as the ultra quiets, maybe.

I may be ready to give up on the Dynomax 17749s. I looked at the Walker quiet flow ss but don’t see a 2.5” offset/offset in an overall length around 25”

thinking again about the j-pipe resonator but my guess is that it’d work best after the muffler? I think that’s where the drone is, if it’s produced by the 17749s then the jpipe needs to be after it.

back on to the creeper. :(

    Exhausted for real now.

took the ultra quiets out and put in plain pipe. Down to the Dynomax Super Turbos and the Dynomax race bullets at the end of the tailpipes. They sound cool. The car feels fast. And it drones. Maybe at a lower volume then with just the mufflers.

not sure what I’m going to do next. I don’t think I had the bullets at the back and the ultra quiets at the front yet. I had slipped the bullets on the end of the tails and just listened to them with the engine at drone RPMs and there wasn’t really any.

so I guess I’ll put the ultra quiets back up front and see what happens.

If I could find an 2.5” offset in offset out muffler that is known to be quiet and not drone then I’d do it. It’s such a crap shoot though.

So those Magnaflows 12256 are 5” top to bottom and 8” wide with a 24” overall length.

Reviews say “no drone” but mostly mentioned on later model cars with cats so who knows how’d they sound on my car.

I found a Magnaflow model that comes with a quarter-wave resonator jpipe but it’s over$500 each. Yikes.

I’m gonna put the ultra quiets up front again. If it still drones I’m going to get rid of all the resonators and build jpipes which is what I should have done in the first place.

It’s 24° here today so I don’t think I’ll be able to do it until a warmer day. Like 40-something.

Find a local exhaust shop that can build you a stock system.

Wow, I can’t believe all the trouble you are having getting rid of your drone! It must really be frustrating!
I guess I got lucky. I used TA down pipes, 2 1/2” Torque Tech exhaust and Walker 17749’s and had zero drone at any rpm on my ‘68 GS400.

It's strange, I have the TA downpipes too, Pypes 2 1/2" system with X-pipe, Walker 17734 mufflers, and chrome 90-degree tips. While it drones way less than the Flowmaster 2-chamber copies that were on there before, it still has a pretty notable drone between 1500 and 2000 RPM. I just decided to live with it and drive faster...
