I've just come from the great big block x-pipe discussion, and was intrested in what pipe diameter people are using. I've currently got twin exit cast headers on both banks, leading into a 'Y' section beneath the bellhousing. The rear section is 1 3/4" diameter going through one silencer and it's real quite...which I don't like.
The engine and trans is offset, so a twin pipe system is not an option, in this case what would be the recomended pipe diameter?

Finally are silencers (mufflers?) better positioned as far back as possible or as close to the headers as possible.

The motor is in a 1966 Land-Rover so there is lots of space to work with.
