So I’m close to wrapping up a project that I’ve been working on for a few years were the idea was to build a stout BBB 482 and put it into a clean ‘85 leSabre coupe resulting in a fun comfortable driver/sleeper.

I recently fired the motor for the first time and if I have any shot of it being a sleeper, I’ll need some good exhaust.

Anyone have any tips of muffler brand/types that do an outstanding job of reducing noise without choking too much performance from the motor?

Walker Super Turbos, 17748 or 17749. They’re the quietest yet best flowing 2.5” muffler out there.

Absolutely a +1 on the Walker Super Turbos. Mello sounding until the secondary's open up. Be sure to get the 20 inch case i.e. the ones Patrick mentioned.

You can also run some 3 in headpipes with race bullets before the mufflers and tailpipes 4 muff system

Keeping in mind that most mufflers can sound differently on different cars, I had the those stainless MagnaFlow on my GS455 when I bought it and they were louder than I liked and droned at about 2000 RPM. I replaced them with Walker Super Turbos and the sound was more subdued and drone went away.

In addition, the MagnaFlows are at least double the cost of the Walkers since they are a stainless muffler. Whatever muffler you decide on be sure to get the right inlet/outlet configuration for the way your tailpipes are routed. The Walker 17749 is offset/offset and the 17748 is offset/center.

Thanks for the input guys. I ordered a pair of 3” Walkers (17769) for starters as I wanted to stay 3” end to end

No drone with Ultra-Flos and better flow than Super Turbos.

Strange, my car is very quiet for what it is, and no drone.

No surprise there. That's why I mentioned that different cars can sound different. My experience was a direct comparison on my car with both mufflers.

Ray, You have the 17748 Offset/Center 2.5 installed. That was the best fit for your car correct. That's to new muffler i will go with.

If I ever do it over again and use a header I will go with 3" inlet and 2.5 out the back. I think that would be the softer and have the best back pressure sound while performing close to the 3" all the way. Mine is 3" now and I would like it to be less noisy.

That's what I had planed, 3" to the muffler than 2.5" tail pipes.

I would love to hear what you think of it.

that 3" with a X pipe my MagnaFlows and 2.5' tail pipes sound amazingly quiet in my car. It has 8.2 DCR with the 4-7 swap and it doesn't sound like my other BBB's. My thinking was also to help scavenge the exhaust better with the 1/2' smaller tailpipe. Whether it really works or not doesn't matter anyway because I have limited room back there due to having the pan-hard bar and ladder bar suspension with an aluminum truck pan for a 20 gallon fuel cell. So, I would do that again on something you want to keep real quiet.

So… I finally got my custom 3” exhaust built with the walker mufflers and while engine runs great open headers, with the full exhaust, the headers (TA Shorties ceramic coated) glow red and the car runs around 220 after about 4-5 minutes of idle. Any ideas?

Sounds like not enough timing advance at an idle.

Whats your initial timing at? A stout 482.....im sure you need at least 18 degrees advance at idle with a decent cam. Any idea your afr at idle? May be lean as well. Both contributors to running hot at idle. Assuming your cooling system is stout.
