OK, this may be in a weird spot for this but it does have to do with the drop top and sound.

I finally put on my N-25 Bumper last weekend, it looks fantastic!! Now I am fixing to install a new exhaust system so it looks correct. I have found several places with the exhaust tips and I want to go with 2 1/2 inch pipes. I plan on keeping the stock exhaust manifolds.

The stuff I need advice for before I go to our local (and highly respected) muffler shop is:

The hangars for the exhaust tips only come in 2 inch (or 2 1/4). Is there a work around? Are there any out there for a 2 1/2?

The mufflers themselves. I was going to go with flow-master but I have heard that they will beat you up in a Convertible as you get past 40 mph. I have heard of folks talking about other mufflers that quiet down as you pick up speed, any thoughts?

Thanks for any and all input.

I have a 2.5 inch dual exhaust x-pipe stainless steel Magnaflow system on my convertible and love it - loud enough but not as loud or as droning as a previous Flowmaster H-pipe system I had.

I'm pretty sure Wheelz used to make stainless steel 2.5 inch N25 tips - and someone else on the board had the 2.5 inch hangers. If you get a stock N25 repro tip you could always have the shop put a reducer on the end of the 2.5 inch tailpipes to accept the tips.

Flowmasters will drone and give you a headache. Check out the Hooker mufflers.

Here's a comparison chart from another forum I am on for my 79 Corvette.

The Hooker Maxflow made the best power while still being very quiet at idle/2000rpm, but nice and loud at WOT. The Bassani Real Street also made nice power without being too loud. Anybody have any feedback on these mufflers?

Great info by all, thanks! Getting closer, still want to see if I can find the 2.5 bumper hanger, but at least I have seen a few pictures of the work around. Love the muffler info!

Little bit of editing here, found the person on the site who sells the 2.5 and 3 inch hangers, Caruso Performance and Restoration
    www.carusoperformance.com

Year One also has the 2, 2.5 and 3 inch exhaust tips, has anyone used there tips and if so some feedback would be nice.

    Thanks

    Just a late update...

I went with the magnaflows, x pipe, and 2.5 exhaust. Very happy with it and my muffler shop guy is not only better than reasonable but a frigin genius! He ordered the x pipe and mandrel bent back pipes, spent all morning on it. If I would have ordered the parts myself it would have cost me more not including the labor!!
Anyway sounds real good now, all the noise comes out the back and I am very happy with it.
Next, and last step for the exhaust is to install headers. If anyone has good recommendations on coatings, manufactures, installation etc, please send it to me. One of the winter projects i think.

Again thanks to everyone for there help. :TU:

Glad you like your set up Mike - I have the same one and I am very happy with it. Just waiting for those new sequential tail lights and then I will be able to finish off my exhaust system by converting the rear pipes into the N25 set up through my bumper.

Yea I love the look of the N-25, makes the back of my car look very clean. The link above where I got the hangars that mount in the bumper and hold the tips are awesome, he uses factory specs and has different sizes. You still using your stock exhaust manifolds or are you running with headers now? If so what kind if you don't mind me asking.

    Hi Mike,

I kept my stock manifolds as my engine is stock and just a cruiser.
