Troy your 69 GS has a different "8.2" than those discussed in those links. There are no reproduction gears for you 8.2 which is a 68-70 Buick only 8.2 . It is not the BOP 8.2 referenced.

Excellent Jim. That helps adding the this titled post. I was wondering just that because we have a rack at pops house with stock and other diffs. In fact that rack now has the buick only, bop, 8.5 and I think a chevy 8.2 diff.

So, there is NO gears available for the buick only 8.2 differential

There are bop and chevy gears available
There are 8.5 gears and plenty of donors

    Keep the consolidation coming.

The 68-70 Buick 8.2 is different than the 64-67 BOP 8.2. The 8.5 uses a corporate center section, and the Buick 8.5's used in the 71-72 Skylark/GS have bolt in axles, which is a really nice rear to build. I have one in my 70 GS, and it has 30 spline Moser axles along with a matching Eaton Posi, and 3.73's

I thought I had read somewhere that they were 27 spline. Uh oh. I read too many things.

    64-67 8.2 BOP only
    68-70 8.2 buick only
    71-72 8.5 30 spline

Is that correct? Ill consolidate the info you guys provide to create a better posting. My next question is, the 71-72 axle will go into the A-body without any drive line cutting? The 71/72 diff with the 8.5 will interchange gears from newer corporate diffs? 3.42 are available for those?

I know this site has been around, has anyone else done a full info piece and posted it here? Maybe the admins could help and then when this is completed it can be posted on the top for viewing only. Thanks

Actually, I believe they are 28 spline, but I went with 30 spline Moser axles, and the 71-72 Skylark/GS is an A body, so why wouldn't it fit? If you go from the 8.2 to the 8.5, you must shorten the driveshaft 1/2-1". Yes, 3.42 are available, same diff as the GN, only the GN is C clip.

I know it will bolt in, the question was without driveline cutting. 8.2 are the only replacement that do not require cutting the driveline where as all 8.5 will require a driveline cut. Unless you have a 71 or 72 driveline correct?

If you mean driveshaft, yes. The driveshaft must be shortened.

I did this as well. It only costs a little more than 150 to have it shortened, re-balanced, and the u-joints changed. Just be sure to use the correct rear u-joint for the yoke. These also use a retaining clip versus a u-bolt. I've had no problems (so far). The 3.42's are a welcome change over the 2.93.

It still amazes me how every list shows the 71 Buick using earlier style 8.2 and never mentions that Buick used the 8.5 corporate rear 71 and later?

    SHHH Don't tell everyone....lol. :) Jim

You should not need a u-joint swap for the 8.2 to 8.5 swap just the shaft shrortening. Do not shorten the shaft till the rear is in. If you want to keep your original shaft do so and just go to the junk yard and find one there to cut...YOU MIGHT even find the correct length one. Take a tap measure and check it out. RECYCLE NOW!...lol. Jim

This site doesnt have it listed easily so I will ask.

What cars will the rear diffs directly bolt into a 68-72 A body?

I dont care about the driveshaft being cut at this point.

Just what cars can you go down to the junk yard and yank the 8.5?

We all know that after that we have to shorten the drive shaft and go pick out the cars with posi carriers in it and just slam em in.

    Thanks

    No one knows?

Im not asking about the carriers just what 8.5 differential will bolt up and make all the springs and wheels fit correctly.

Ive already gone through that site, but thanks. I enjoy the site but that seems to be a missing detail.

Im assuming the 80s to 87 differentials in the gran national (G) bodies will bolt right in. But never had one so I dont have a clue. I basically want to go to the local "recycler" and look at a cheby or another GM and say I want to put that 1 legger in. See what Im getting at?

Yeah, but while you have it out and at the shop, new u-joints and a balancing aren't a bad idea. I wanted all new stuff for my upgrade ...

Send me a PM of how much you may want for it and I can have it picked up.

Still no one answered the question of what donor car you can walk into a yard and grab the diff and just bolt it up. lol

That's probably because no one understands what you are asking. You keep using different terms, differential, carriers, rears. Are you asking about the entire rear, drum to drum, or the actual posi carriers?

Any 68-72 Rear Axle assembly will bolt into your car. 8.2 or 8.5 10 bolt, or Chev 12 bolt.

64-67 Rear Axle assembly will fit, but is about 1" shorter in width.

That's it, nothing else from the yard will bolt in without modification.

Your best to look for a 71 or 72 8.5" unit, as those are the ones you can get parts for readily.

I do believe that you will find these in all BOP and some Chev A bodies of this vintage.

Be able to id the axle assembly out of the car, as there have been many swaps over the years, and you may find and earlier car with a later rear, or vice versa. Or often times they are just laying on the ground.

No, the GN rear will not bolt in directly.
