Has anyone had any luck with cooling there 455 with electric fans? Do to the lack of room in my 86 Monte Carlo SS I'd like to go that rought if they will keep it cool. I have 1 16 inch 10 blade fan would this be enough?

    Kevin,
I drive my race car to the track each week, and race in sometimes 4 events per weekendl. My 455 has a healthy cam, and I have one electric fan, and the Miezere electric water pump.
The car has never overheated, and the hottest it has got up to was on a 100 degree day, was around 200 on the way back from a low 12 second pass.
The fan is off a Crown Vic, and it is set to come on at 160, and also has an override so in the pits, I can even get it colder if I want to.

Thanks ,Rick My fan like i said is a 16 inch 10 blade. Its a mistergasket aftermarket fan. I would still have to get some kind of thermoastat to tell it when to come on. Or do you think it would be better just to get a factory one off a big car like you did.

I use dual electric puller fans, complimented by one pusher fan. On the highway they never come on, they really only come on in a traffic jam. But then the combination pushes a LOT of air and keeps the engine temperature from creeping up.

    Kevin,
I've used electric fans on my car for some years now, and the only problem I had was wiring. Use relays and make sure that the rotation of the blade is correct. Those motors are reversible ya know!  The only time you really need them is during street-light driving or during racing. Above 35-40mph, there is plenty of airflow..

    I use 1 puller and 1 pusher 16" BTW.

I really like the dual fan setup. I am cheap and went to the wrecking yard for my single fan and got if for $20 - $30. The biggest expense was the electric water pump.

When I get rich:eek: someday, I am going to go to the dual fan setup.

I was really thinking of going with the pusher and puller set up. I think i'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.. I dont have alot of room from the front of the water pump to the radiator so going electric will help out alot. I'm also going to need a oil filter relocation kit as there is only about 3/4 of a inch between it and the frame. And the engine wiring harness is a real nightmare

The electric fans shouldn't be a problem, I got a Dual fan setup (puller) from the local yard here for $35. Out of a Foreign car... Don't know what tho. Your oil filter shouldn't be a problem, I didn't have any probs. with my 455 in a 84 cutlass (unless there are some differences between the Montees). Actually, I was even able to use a Flex fan in the stock V8 shroud (2in spacer) and it fit perfect (that was for the olds 307 tho, not sure about the shroud for the 305). Back to the point, The electric fans do a good job of cooling (even in the FL heat) I can sit for as long as I want and it will not get over 190 without a thermostat. Although I do have a Alum. radiator... Never ran this setup with a stock rad tho... but did have the stock rad and flex fan in the 84 down here and had no probs with that either (200-210).

Good luck with it, There are plenty of G body 455's here for more reference:TU:

I use a dual fan out of some ricer I got at the junk yard for $20. I use a Painless wiring setup and 5 core brass radiator. Runs about 190 degrees. I think that old Ford Aerostars have a good dual setup.

Works as good or better than the $1000 setups from BeCool... have about $375 in the whole thing.

I have no problem running electric fans. When is the last time you had a fan failure on car?

I think I paid $90+ for 1 16" fan from Jegs. Before I had even installed it, I found one exactly like it at the swap meet. Cost, $4. Lesson learned, shop around, don't just throw money thru the phone!! :Dou:

i've got a single fan that was on the car when i got it. looks like it was ripped from a junker, but it cools very well in traffic, moves tons of air. i see no reason to use a clutch fan when electrics save space and HP while still cooling quite well.
