I still think a 650 AVS2 would be the best bet on a 364. like I said I tried a 800 AVS over my 750 AVS on my 425 and went slower but never tried a AVS2 maybe it will work. tell me or show me some testing by just making one change at a time. I have about 19 chassis dyno tests, track time and G-meter testing on 401, 425 and 446 nail heads.

Aaron65 --- did you instal the 650 AVS2 straight out of the box ?

I did, but I ended up tightening the secondary door a half turn, moving the accelerator pump arm to the richest adjustment, and using some 7" step up springs. I haven't hooked up my wideband to do a final tune, and it ran pretty well before I made those adjustments. I also pulled off the lid and readjusted the floats; they were a little high out of the box.

I see Amazon have a good deal on the 650 AVS2 right now ( for me anyway ) I've read some cases of Chinese repros of carbs, I wonder if they do a rip off of these Edelbrock ---- not that I would buy one, just trying to be aware and cautious.

I got mine on Amazon for about 400 dollars last month. It's a real one; I don't think the repop is based on the AVS2.

You are going to need a supercharger or nitrous to get 350-400 HP out of your 364. If you will settle for a lumpy idle I might believe 350 ish HP, but getting over 350 HP with the Nailhead exhaust ports will be challenging. It is wise to remember that the Nail was designed with gobs of bottom-end torque to get a heavy car up to speed with a strong, smooth, but inefficient automatic transmission. The Nailhead feeds the torque converter (The Dynaflow torque converter was an industry first) with loads of torque which is multiplied by the converter. High-end horsepower was not a serious design consideration. If I was looking for high-end horsepower, the Nailhead would not be my engine of choice. I was looking for bottom-end torque with the Nailhead in my Chevy pickup, and it sure delivered.

I'm going to buy a new carb this week and have a decision to make. Can get a good deals on the AVS2 650 and an alternative that has been recommended , that being the Performer 600. I like the idea of annular boosters but the Performer gives better fuel economy, apparently. S0 -------

There is no logical reason one would get better mileage than the other. That is all about jetting and the way you drive. The AVS should give better throttle response but, otherwise, they are the same.

I have two AVS2 carburetors an 800 on my 425 and a 625 on a 396. Both ran perfect straight out of the box. Off the line they run like a modern fuel injected car----no hesitation! My 425 is in a 5000 pound 52 Buick with 3.o8 gears. I went to Spokane last week and round trip got 12 MPG at 70 mph and some really strong head winds. At O degrees two pumps and they start right up and idle with electric choke. I am real happy with them.

I have an AVS2 on one 401, it starts so much better than my other nailheads. The difference is almost amazing.

Walt, maybe I need to change air cleaners too, that’s a nice difference! I have a K&N filter in the pancake for what it’s worth. It may help a little as the lid sits up with that filter.
