Hey Everyone, it's been a while since I posted, but after the repairs I made to the nailhead last fall, the ol gal was running well. I had the motor out in the fall to fix a broken piston skirt, and as soon as it was fixed and reinstalled, I drove the car right to the storage unit and it sat until 4/25. BTW the car is a 1962 LeSabre, trans is a 63 dynaflow. I drove it daily from then on, and noticed quite a bit of trans fluid on my drive. She normally leaks a little bit, so I ignored it until I check the fluid level and it barely read on the stick. I filled it up and then started the car and looked underneath at the trans area. Fluid was coming out at a rapid pace from the flywheel/front cover area. After digging around on this site for a few days, I decided to pull the trans and take care of this leak now. My initial thought is that the front cover seal went bad, so I ordered on off of ebay with the part # 1102094(hasn't arrived yet). I took the front cover off and cannot locate where this seal is supposed to be. Below are photos of the front cover and front of housing. When I first pulled the front cover, in the groove on the housing where the arrow points to there was like a sludgy, hardish material, which I scraped off. Could this be a deteriorated seal? Is this where the front cover seal goes? I hope I'm not missing anything, and hopefully it is just this simple seal. Thank you all in advance!
I wish you the best of luck. I replaced seals in my dads 62 lesabre about 5 years ago. When I finished it was not leaking at all. My Dad said “wow I can’t believe it!” Then about 3 months later he said “ ok now it’s a Buick again. It leaks” I Wish that it would have lasted longer.
I believe there is a seal behind the torque converter itself. Remove the torque converter and the seal should be there. I would replace that too if the transmission is removed.
If it didn't leak before the engine was removed, it could be the front trans seal The torque converter was in one position for many years and it now was probably pushed into the trans while installing the engine.
Yes that one. I actually found it. It is super hard and was hard to tell it wasn't metal! The one I ordered from ebay is a round seal, like a typical Oring.
It didnt leak much if at all before engine was removed. One thing I think I should mention is that prior to removing the motor, it was suggested that I tighten the 3 flywheel bolts. Well, I ended up breaking one bolt head and was able to get it out and replaced, but I'm wondering if that didn't disrupt the front seal enough to have it leak?
yes, I bought this seal as well, I am just super afraid to pull anything more out with the fear that I will lose something or mess something up. She works well, just leaks.
When you install that seal, fill the inside area with Vaseline. It will help prevent the spring from coming off of the seal.
Roger that. I already took the next part off a few days ago and these little weights went everywhere. I was able to get them back in. If thats the only thing I need to worry about, I'll have a go at it this weekend! Fingers crossed.
