I'm getting ready to change my points. Can someone out there please give me a "refresher course"? THANKS
Dan, try to get yourself a dwell meter if you don't have one. If you do, install the points and set the dwell to 30* FIRST. Dwell effects timing, timing does not effect dwell. Jim
If your car is in running condition, the new points will be set closely enough to start easily. Just change them and the condenser, and then set the dwell and then set the timing!
Use the starter to set the points open on the bump to 0.018" and then use the meter to fine tune the dwell to 30 degrees.
Dump the points and buy an electronic conversion like Pertronix. You will get a stronger spark without worring about dwell.
The great thing about a points system is that you get lots of practice with your dwell meter. Seems that for years I was checking my points every month.
Take my advice, DON'T GET PERTRONIX. I was stranded...twice, by that stuff. Stick with the points unless you absolutely have to have a Pertronix unit. And make sure you keep a set of points and condenser in the glove box with you at all times.
Badbrad, In the late 60's I found a ''in dash'' dwell meter that I installed in my 64 Lark. It was really neat to be able to look at the dwell at any time. It was a 2 1/8 '' round guage, with a light in it and a calibration button at the bottom of the face. I cant remember the brand, though.
Dan if you don't have a dwell meter do this. Set point gap @ .016 on the bump. Closeup distributor and start engine. After engine is warm, adjust points with one of the flex tools thru the distributor window as follows. Turn adjusting screw clockwise until engine misfires, then backout screw counter clockwise 1/2 turn. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done and enjoy one of your favorite beverages after closing point window and driving car to prove it is ok! -Mike D.
