What is the purpose of crossing chains to the tow vehicle? Does it have anything to do with how it will follow if all goes bad?:Do No:

When you cross the chains, it forms a little nest-like piece in case the tongue comes loose. The tongue will drop into the crossed chains rather than possibly hitting the pavement. Makes controlling the loose trailer easier and safer to handle.

Well that makes perfect sense. At some point I was told it helped if it came unhitched and 1 chain broke it helped.
    Thanks:)

BTW I do cross 'em anyway!!

I've never thought of that before but indeed it makes sense. I've crossed chains before just because they're too long and would drag on the pavement otherwise

Also, you don't "stretch" or "slack" the chains in turning, as the amount pulled on one end is the amount given on the other end of the same chain. But primarily for safety, as Race says.
