Dumb newbie engine questions

    ethan buicks rock!

Hey there, well I'm not really a newbie to the forums anymore, but I'm still a definite engine newbie. I've changed plugs, wires, rotor and set the timing, but that's about all I know. :Do No:

So I'm considering purchasing a rebuilt 455 for my 66 lark. I've already got some valuable info on the swap, so all I really need to know now are some questions specific to the engine...

I found what I think is to be a decent rebuilt 455 online, but it's really difficult to get an idea about an engine without checking it out in person. What kind of questions should I ask the seller? What else should I absolutely know about the engine? Here is the info that he's sent me so far:

    455 buick engine
2 bolt main block checked and bored .030
    new hastings rings
    .030 over KB pistons
stock rods - checked and conditioned
new clevite 77 bearings (rod main and cam)
    seasoned crank .010 size
new dynagear oil pump and pump drive
new crane flat tappet cam and lifters 288/.460
    new dynagear timingchain
stock heads magnafluxed with new valve job
stock valve covers (red painted steel)
    10.5 to 1 compression
    oil pan
    4 bbl stock intake
    vibration damper

    Thanks for the help!:TU:

i would watch engines on line. the best thing to do is to buy a core engine and have a reputable buick guy build it . also TA performance sells short and long blocks now. i would not buy an engine on line. that is asking for trouble. just my 2 cents.

John, you could check the parts section on this board first. Awhile back, Mike Garrison was selling a nice complete engine ready to drop in at a very reasonable price. Randy

Yup, I wished I had the $$ when Mike was selling that engine. It was really a steal!

I think I'm just going to have to wait until I have some more cash. I could probably afford a locally rebuilt engine, but I doubt it will be by someone that has a ton of Buick experience. I just don't think I can afford what I really want-- a nice street/light strip 455 built by a reputable Buick guy.

I guess I'd better start saving or just get a lot happier with my 300...
