I like that "cascade of parts" line... I may borrow that. Its exactly true too as we all know. The PO did do new lines to the rears so those are OK for now. The numbers on the MC indicate 1-1/8" piston so I am gonna try to duplicate the system (it works well now) and change out the booster too as it looks like heck...The poor car has already cascaded into a pile of parts and I don't want to let it get away from me LOL Bill in TR

That's a bleeder screw master. the OE kind. Might even be original to the car.

You guys are great. I still very new at this so my questions off... Or maybe I'm just uneducated in auto mechanics...

I had to replace my master cylinder and I was able to change my right rear brakes. First time I every did that. I ran into a problem with removing the other screws with my tools so decided to spend a little cash at a one of the oldest repair shops in my town. Everything is going great except for my front inner and outer bearing need to be replaced.

I'm trying to all of the parts in before Friday so that the guy can finish the job. So please help me if you can. Here are my questions.

    1. How many seals will I need? 2 or 4? and are the seals different? (outer /inner)

    2. Is it true that I need 4 inner bearings and 4 outer bearings?

    3. Are compression drums better??

I haven't done front drum brakes in quite awhile so I looked at my 1970 Buick Chassis manual. On the front brakes, there is an inner and outer seal, and an inner and outer bearing. That makes 2 bearings and 2 seals PER SIDE. I looked up a 65 Skylark on www.rockauto.com and I only see an inner seal listed.

I think if you intend to work on this car, the very first thing you should buy is a 1965 Buick Chassis manual. Here is one on E Bay,

Less than 20.00 with shipping. How can you go wrong?

I do not know what a compression drum is?

There is no outer seal on front drums or discs. Just the inner grease seal. The dust cap keeps the grease in on the outer end

That's what I thought. In the 70 Chassis manual, it looks like there are 2 seals, one on either side of the backing plate, on the larger cars. (page 50-20). The Skylark shows just one inner seal, and a gasket between the backing plate and spindle. Probably the same for 65.

So 2 bearings and one seal per side.

One seal per side for the big cars, too. I've never seen an outer seal on any drum.

I don't remember one either, but what is this big seal labelled on the outer side of the backing plate? They look like 2 different seals. Like I said, I can't remember the last time I dealt with front drum brakes. I know the disc rotors have 1 inner seal on the back side. This looks like 2 seals, one on either side of the backing plate. This is page 50-20 of the 1970 Buick Chassis manual. It is for the bigger cars that year.

Be careful with this "Compression drum" thing, it sounds fishy. I never heard of one either. Compression disc maybe? Those would be disc brakes and are a big improvement over drum brakes.

That is sandwiched between the backing plate and the spindle.

OK, so no need to replace that unless you are replacing the spindle.

Right...come to think of it, I just used the old ones on my 58 when I took it apart. They were still in really good shape. They probably aren't even reproduced.
