I'm working on another '65 Skylark, I put a 455 th400 in it, I had a driveshaft left over from my '65 racecar, I bought an adapter Ujoint and stuffed it in. But this is not the ideal set up, looks like the shaft is 1 1/4 in. too short! I thought about just leaving it, and did, but now I put a posi rear end in the car and either need to buy another adapter Ujoint, or spend more money having a new driveshaft made. with the car level and weight on the suspension, from when I've had other driveshafts made, they said push the yoke into the trans. all the way, then pull it out 3/4 in., and it would need to be 1 1/4 longer to drop into the rear end yoke. This is NOT a race car, just a street car, from looking closer, and measuring the trans yoke splines, at instertion, being too short, the splined portion is about half engaged in the trans, if the shaft was 1 1/4 longer, it would be 1 1/4 deeper into the trans, make sense??
    What's your opinion.

IMHO get a new shaft made. i had a quote on a complete shaft. from complete trans yoke to rear universal i was quoted at $299 not bad imho.

you have half the parts call around and see how much to replace the tube and balance.

On my old 68 skylark, I put in a chevy 12 bolt and the pinion snout stuck out farther i believe. I had to run a hybrid u-joint in the back, but also had to have my driveshaft cut. I found a local shop that cut it, welded it and balanced it. Cost me $75 I think, about 10 years ago. They even cleaned it up nice and painted it.
