driver's tie rod end

I replaced the nut and cotter pin on the driver's outer tie rod end joint. When I went to torque, the nut tightened down quite a bit but then started slipping (the nut and stud end turned together vs. the nut torquing down on the stud). I did not separate the joint...just replaced the nut and cotter pin. Car is on the ground...full weight on the joint.

Any ideas how to get the nut to torque...

Any idea why it isn't torquing...the passenger side tightened right up.

    Damage a possibility?

Hate to remove the tie rod...and have to tack on an alignment.
