I'm file fitting the hasting rings. I'm .030 over. What would you guys set the 1st and second ring gaps at for drag racing?
Stock is .013 - .023 for top and second.

Mike Miller of Miller Racing and I are filing the rings for each cylinder. By what he has found the cylinders are pretty straight after my hone job.

I found another ring set for that size and it had a gap chart in it. It said .018-.022 for the top and .022-.024 for the second. We went .018 top and .022 second and checked it top, bottom and middle of ring travel. After my hone job the cylinders where almost the same top and bottom by the ring gap at those locations. I would have liked to have my torgue plate on it but it's not here.

How did you square the rings in the bore?

Used a piston with no rings and try to make it parrelel from top to bottom and side to side pushing on the flats of the bottom of the skirt.

Another Indianapolis machine shop screw up. :af: I had the mains turned to .030 since that bearing went bad and I told them don't cut it any less then .010 from the thickest journal because most of them had .002 clearance. Well I platigaged it and they barely touched the .001 - .003 plastigage. I tried the red gage first and it crushed it a little. I made some adjustments and got it back close but that's not the right way to do it and I don't give this engine long to live.
I sent the crank to Component and he said he had to send it to Quinlan because he didn't have the right stone for the taper at the edges and he had alot of VW cranks to grind. Fred has always said not to take anything to Quinlan but A long time ago he did a pretty good job on my Engine. That's why I want to open a machine shop here so things get done right. I know someone said here when I had the machine shop thread that there was a place 50-100 miles from here that does all of there Buick work.
If I got that crank cromed would that bring it back up .001 thicker?

I'm checking endplay and I have .005, the spec is .003 to .009. I heard that is too tight for a drag race engine but I think tighter would be better from the hitting of the torgue convertor. What do you guys think?

Last look before the pan goes on. Add some oil in the pick up until it runs out the filter.

I bought this paint to see what it looks like but I think I want more of a maroon color. This paint is from Ace Hardware and it's called Ace Premium Enamel Burgandy Gloss 1196419.

depending on how much you need to close it up,you could send the bearings to get coated. I know they can do up to .0005 on each shell.
