A Car setup like that is likely to be a posi. I am looking for a driver side seat, rear seat insert and a console, any luck?

    69 GS Riviera POSI unit!

Hi. A local feller had parted out a 69 GS Riviera. . he kept the rear end. . . I believe it sports either a 3:42 or 3:90 posi? :Do No: Dunno for sure. . .IF this unit will work for you. . lemme know and I'll check it out and get back to you. :bglasses: Wheelz, Tampa Bay

The easiest way to find out if its a posi is this..

Jack up the rear end in the center... until both wheels are off the ground... with the car in PARK, try to turn the wheels...if they dont turn and feel like the ebrake is on.. then it most likely is a posi.... Then put trans in neutral (not running,, and try to spin wheels, if they go both the same direction, then its a posi, if one turns one way and the other turns the opposite direction, then its not a posi... when you reply to this, can you write me at mr62buick@yahoo.com either way, I might need the center section of the diff, might be better gear selection than the 2:89's I have right now.... How much for the center section?? (drop out part)

    Thanks again, steve

    Misunderstanding?

    Uh Steve. . I do know what a posi is. . however, what I meant was " Dunno if its a 3:23, or a 3:42 or a 3:90!
NOW JUST TODAY. . I went by his place and openedup the cover. . its a real clean appearing 49-14 ring & pinion POSI!! That equates to a 3:50 positraction gearset. If you are still interested, I'll get you a price. . .What are you expecting to pay?? :Do No:
BTW I have a few pix I'll send you if you'll forward me your email address!!! Wheelz, Tampa Bay

    Uh, WELL?

Ok Guys. . .I've got pictures. . however, I CAN'T DOWNLOAD THEM TO THIS SITE. .AAAARRRRG!
The part is GM stamped with 49-14 on the ring. . if I can, I'll even try to read off the part numbers. .perhaps that'll shed some light on what this really is. . :Do No: . .Wheelz, Tampa Bay

Well, if you pulled off a rear cover then it is DEFINATELY NOT the same and won't work.
A front drop-out style third memember (like a nine-inch Ford or an eight and 3/4 inch Mopar) is what he needs. :Smarty:

Sorry, these 50 year old eyes are playin games with me lately. Looks like the ring gear has 43-14. .not 49-14 as previously noted. . .thats a 3:08 posi. YEAHHH, thats more like it huh. Sorry.
    ANyway, thanks for the input.

    Joe,
I I read here that the axle diameter and/or spline count changed in '63...

    Thank you all....

Thanks guys for helping out... yes the 69 will not work (unfortunate) and yes the 64 axles are smaller in diameter. So yes I need a 62 and earlier posi and I await the gentleman with the wildcats answer. There is a posi carrier on Ebay for a 62 pontiac (auburn style) and the guy says it may work... so if the wildcat has the 3:42 gears (thats what they usually had as I had 2 of them) and not a posi, maybe the two together??? (posi from ebay and 3:42's from Wildcat??) Does anyone know if the auburn from a pontiac drop out will work??? It is dated 2/'62

I think the early Pontiac stuff is a different breed entirely. Are there even the same number of bolts holding the ring gear on? :puzzled:

  14. a friend has older pontiacs and we tried to match them up
the pontiac and olds drop outs are the same but the buick is by itself
the carrier themselves bolt in and are configured differnt
    his email as well is
tazimmy@aol.com if interested in talking to him as well

    its complete yet
i think i'll drop it out and look at it
    you guys tell me
whit the drive shaft in park the axles turn opisite
when i turn the drive shaft and put pressure to both sides they both turn forward and the other way they both turn back

    If..

If its a true posi, put the car in park, and try to turn a wheel.. it shouldnt move at all. if its in neutral, turn one wheel, and the other should move in the same direction. Otherwise if its turns opposite, its not a posi. But if it has the 3:42 gears, I'll take it.

    Let me know... steve
