I recently purchased a reprint '68 Skylark assembly manual and it is missing many pages. I am looking for part number (drawing / page number) 1383717 and 1385749.

I would be nice to have a "complete" manual and I had my chance a few months ago on e-bay but I did not realize how many pages were missing in the reprint versions.

  2. I've got a reprint too, that really sucks. I didn't realize what it was when I picked it up on ebay shortly after I bought my car. It would sure be nice to find an original. I'll check to see if I've got your missing pages later on today.

    David,

I purchased mine from Year One. Hopefully it is different than yours and we can put them together to make a more complete verison.

One of the pages I am looking for is referenced for the "GS Rallye Stripe" The page I have says see tab sheet 1385749" for part number. The weird thing is that they are calling the stripe an "applique" and I always thought it was painted :Do No:

    "applique" does me decal right?

  4. yeah, sounds like "decal" to me too. I'll have a look a little later on here, and let you know what I find.

  5. Sorry Mike, no luck here. I have both a 68 Skylark Assy Manual, and a 68 Buick(43000/44000) Assy Manual. Both are reprints, neither shows what you're looking for. The Skylark book is pretty bad quality, but the other one is pretty good quality. I'm confused about the different names on the front covers. They appear to be identical otherwise.

or is the Assy. Manual different :Do No:

  7. Nope Alan, it's called an Assembly Manual.

  8. Both of mine are for the A-body buick, but have different covers. One is a 68 HT, the other a convertible.

    Alan,

As David said the assembly manual is different. It shows how the car was put together on the factory assembly line. They are very hard to find as originals.... I missed my chance at one on e-bay a few months back and I am kicking myself for it now... It sold for $55...... If I knew how bad the reprints were I would have paid double that price...

Mike if it helps when I stripped my car down there was remnants of the old stripe on the inner edges of the panels, it was a vinyl stripe, not paint.

Thanks Roberta, I guess the '68 GS stripe was a decal and not paint as I first thought....

    Hi All,

This is my first post here, great site! I restored an original one-owner '68 GS 400 over 15 years ago, and made careful measurements of the Rallye Stripe in order to recreate it. Besides photos, I traced the stripe on a sheet of paper so here are the EXACT dimensions:

    1/4" stripe
    9/16" gap
    1 7/8" stripe
    9/16" gap
    1/4" stripe

Bottom stripe is 3/16" from bottom of door

Top stripe runs into fender louver, stripe should be inline
with lower black portion of louver as if stripe continues into louver.

Hope this helps out. I will also be putting a post up to possibly locate my 1968 GS 400 that took 1st place at the '89 GSCA Nats. Last known location was Illinois over 12 years ago.

    Jeff,

Thanks for the info and welcome to the board..:beer
Did you paint your stripe on or use a decal?

    MY GM parts book does show this;

    Group 12.112
    Tape, front door panel ornament
    part number:
    7779409 (Black)
    7779419 (Red)
    7779656 (White)

Those are the only three colors that the stripe was available in (except a few SCO cars).

Mike, when I moved the '68 GS350 the other day to get the '68 GS400 convertible out of the garage, I looked at the drivers door and in fact there are pieces of the stripe in white vinyl. I don't remember where these doors came from though, we put them on the car, cause the orginals were rough, and it got 2 more doors out of the garage! But there's still too many in there, plus the 2 that weren't that bad off the convertible in the dungeon(basement). But ones I put on the 350 car are the only ones with the telltale stripe. I hope to get the convertible touched up sometime soon, maybe I'll have the stripes put on it then, white would be really cool or should i do black with the black interior and top, were the choices based on car color or interior color? The factory stripes are decals, so I had a local "auto striping guy" put them back on for me to spec.

I restored a 68 GS convertible for a friend, white car with burgundy interior, and his car had the red stripes.

I had made a photocopy of my factory build sheet, but haven't located that yet (just started digging out my old stuff yesterday).
    Stripe was listed on sheet.

This is a page from my "incomplete" '68 assembly manual. It shows the body color / stripe color options.

Thanks for the diagram. Backs up my version that there is no short piece of tape between front of fender louver and frt. wheel well. Top stripe ends at louver.
