Would like to put in a manual tranny in my 72 gs. are all buick flyweels balanced the same are will i have to have to rotating assy, rebalanced as a unit? Any help would be great. Thanks, Tom in Killdeer ND.
You need to balance flywheel to your rotating assembly or bad news is in store. Take your flex plate from the engine to a machine shop with your flywheel and they can match balance it, Don't just swap it out.
If you want the absolute ''finest'' balance there is,,, what Mo says is true,,,,, but flywheels , clutches , and clutch plates are balanced as a unit and can be just bolted in and used... ditto tork converters,,,, on the assembly lines the factories dont fine ''balance'' engines, the engines are manufactured to specs and balanced at the engine assembly plant and then set into the chassis and all the other stuff bolted to them and you can interchange the parts. that is part of the design ,,,,,, I have done it many times.... even changing from auto trans to standard and from standard to auto... and in my opinion, the fact that Buick engines are low rpm engines helps that situation.... I doubt you could tell the difference.....
Thanks for all the info guys, this will help alot. i think i will use the flywheel as bought and try it on my 430 while building my 455. if i don't like it, i will ballance everything on the 455. thanks again.
NO,NO you cant switch from a 430 to a 455.... the flywheel/flexplate/ has to stay with the size engine that it came with.... but you can switch from one 455 to another 455 without rebalancing..... or one 430 to another 430 without balancing.....
If you are building the 455 then you def. Want the machine shop to balance the rotating assy. With the flexplate or flywheel you intend to use
Take your flywheel and new clutch set up and have it balanced neutral. There is as much chance of issues with the pressure plate as anything.
Why would you want to neutral balance the flywheel? The BBB is an externally balanced engine; e.g. both the harmonic balancer and flexplate/flywheel need some amount of counterweight unless the entire reciprocating assembly has been converted to "internal" balance. Devon
As moleary stated, have the flywheel match balanced to your flexplate. Have the pressure plate neutral balanced.
