Does the back of the engine give the numbers to match to the VIN?

Nope, the vehicle serial number is STAMPED into the right side block deck and should match VIN, you pointed it out yourself in post #8. These numbers were stamped at the factory.

    See https://www.teambuick.com/reference/ident_engine_where.php again.

The CASTING numbers at the rear of the block simply show engine size, either 400, 430, 0r 455. Those numbers were cast at the foundry.

Left side of block-above dipstick for code and forward for VIN.

There is at least one other person on here that has proof a 430 was put in a 1968 GS 400 at the factory.

I think it says 430, what do you think? Will try to get a better photo when I get it cleaner.

    And the 1381625 means it's a 1967.

The only proof a 430 was put in by the factory would be a stamped VIN on the block that matches the car. Until I see that it never happened.

End of investigation, the engine was changed sometime during the cars life.

That would make the valve cover make sense. I couldn’t make that number out but glad you can

I just realized that since I have a 67 engine in a 68 GS400, I can get the 67 Star Wars Air Cleaner!

Here is a valve cover that I think looks like my passenger side? It says it came off of a 68 Electra 225, but I don’t see this on other pictures of those. I don’t see any spot welded looms, do you? I can’t see it too well from photo.

The company selling it, I don’t think exists anymore or is closed, but their listing on this site still exists.

Looks like a '67 to me, I can see the plug wire looms. Pretty poor photo, though.

Well, it helps to look in correct place for the engine serial number. I was looking on driver’s side before because I thought it was 68, so assumed there was gunk covering the numbers. Now that I know it is a 67 430, when I look on correct side (right side), it is easy to see numbers with a few wipes with a cloth and some degreaser.

And the big reveal, drum roll please….

    Engine Serial: 7H 276320

I am not sure if it is safe to post a VIN online but let’s just say the VIN serial starts with 8H and doesn’t match.

Not numbers matching as you all suspected.

I am finding a weird production code on engine or I can’t make it out. It looks like 4I2. Shouldn’t there be a MD or ND for a 67 430 to start production code then 3 numbers?

I see the “ND” at top now. Didn’t see that before.

I thought it would be in line with other letters.

So production code looks to be: ND 4I2

I believe the 412 is engine build date.

You should be able to look on the intake to easily read the date code by looking for some numbers that are cast into it. They would read something like "A12" or "B 1". It would be a letter code then a number behind it.
