I'm getting ready to fire up my engine after having it pulled, so I decided to clean up my HEI distributor. After taking it apart I found out that the magnet was broke and it was rusty inside. So now I want to buy a new distributor and wonder what is a good distributor that will handle at least 6,000 rpm. I would like an in the cap coil. What do you guys recomend? Also will a pontiac distributor work for a 455 Buick?
    Thanks
    Chris

Neg on the Indian distrib. A stock Buick points distrib converted to electronic pick up will work fine. Most of the performance people seem to prefer running one with a 6aL box and a rev limiter chip for protection should something break. What gear are you going to use to turn 6k in a 455?

The gear that is in the car now is a 3.31. I was asking about the pontiac and Buick being the same b/c in summit there is a distributor that says for Buick/pontiac...I looked in my Hollander books and it said only buick. So I thought I would just ask...thanks for the reply.

Call Summit and ask if it's a typo- they may have meant it was available for Buick, Pontiac- not Buick/Pontiac- the comma and the backslash on a keyboard are close together, could just be a misprint.

You'll find it will be difficult to rev an in-cap coil to 6000. They are epoxy and just have inherent problems regenerating spark quick enough. Not that it won't, but they just aren't the best choice for that.

A Dave's HEI conversion will really light it up and be very reliable. And if you are planning a 6000 red line, then you are obviously dumping some cash into the build. Skimping on a distributor in a case like that just doesn't make sense.
