Anybody know the technical name of that weird drain thing coming from the dishwasher and exiting out into the kitchen sink? I'm redoing the kitchen counters in granite and need to change this device to a more pleasing color. No offense meant to those of you not "priviledged" enough to own a dishwasher.
Picture Brad: Can you post a picture of what your're talking about? Tha only connection my dishwasher has to the sink is the dish charge hose and the P-trap.o No:
David, I have a dishwasher, not a digital camera!!!!! I think this thing is a bypass drain used in case the disposal is plugged up. It exits out the top of the sink on the non-disposal side of the sink. No offense meant to those of you not "privileged" enough to own a disposal either!!!!
Yes, there is a plumber in the house. You're probably talking about the "air gap" which mounts next to the faucet on the sink. It can now be eliminated by running the discharge hose from the dishwasher to either the opening in the disposer or a "Y" pipe installed in the extension tube.
Jan is correct. It is called an "Air Gap" This devise is absolutly unessesary, It really serves no function except to waste a hole in the sink that could be used for something more usefull (instant hot water dispenser, soap dispenser, or even a filtered water dispenser). If I were you I'd throw that thing as far as possible. If you do this just make sure that the diswasher drain hose is looped (like many on this board:Brow: ) up as high as possible under the new countertop, the higher the better. It is a must to do this as it creates a trap in the dishwasher drain and also holds the water in the dishwahser.
