The starter in my 68 Chevelle died peacefully about a week ago. I'm trying to determine if it could be original. It's definately an old one. The casing and casting are much heavier than what's on today's remanufactured starters. The cast portion has codes of 3954, M8 and R1. The steel casing has a Delco Remy USA stamping. Right above it it's stamped 1108446 16163. Can anybody help decode this? Thanks,
Not sure on the number or R1 but M would be December and 8 1968? Would be for a 69 car I guess probably a replacement but do not trade it in unless you verify this more. Another thought could be December 8 with no year.
