"D" means forward honey, "R" is backwards.

I was always told the "R" setting was for RACE!

Every time I get in the Roadmaster, I have to think pendular. Instead of, prindle.
    (P N D L R vs P R N D L)
I'm glad no one was hurt.

In my Oldsmobile, the shift pattern was P R N D S L . The S was'nt for second, it was for Super........ really!

I had a Suzuki Samurai that we put a 3.8 in. The auto shifter was the floor mounted type from an 81 Camaro. The only way I could make it work was to put the shifter in backwards. Instead of Park being all of the way at the top, Park was at the bottom. So, the pattern went:

    1
    2
    D
    N
    R
    P

(This made for some awesome streetlight to streetlight racing since all I had to do was pull the shifter down from 1 to 2 and then into D.

Once, I accidentally pulled too hard and went into reverse. The backwheels spun backwards for a bit, then broke a U-joint.)

To make matters worse, I fitted a 5spd shift knob from a Toyota on the end, that had the 5spd shift pattern on it. I never bothered to remove the clutch pedal and had just left it hanging in place. It really was the best anti-theft device, because anybody that ever got into it couldn't figure it out.

This has gotten even better. She was getting ready to take the kids to Valdosta to an amusement park there where they have season passes so she was checking all the fluids. It turns out that she thought the car had to be in N to check the trans fluid. Soooooo with the engine running she reached in the window and pulled the shifter out of P and into R on the way to N:spank: . The car took off back wards. It did stop 1/2 way through the garage door. Only scratched the bumper cover.I got the complete story when she got home. Now my ? is this... Why was she able to pull it out of park without her foot on the brake? Its a 07 Hyundai. I know it has that safety feature.

I learned not to be too aggressive on the downshift in my 63 Invicta Wagon with this one. Ever seen a car go into reverse at WOT at 45 MPH?

mmmmmmmmmmmm must be a girl thing, I've got 2 garage doors with wrinkles in them. One from starting a standard in gear, the other someone didn't apply pressure on the brake soon enough.

My dad had a 62 and 64 Olds, with P N D S L R as the shift pattern, and yes, I knew even then S was "Super". The first car I ever drove was the 64.

If my memory is correct, the early Olds (and I presume Cadillac) Dual-Range Hydramatics didn't have a Park position. You put the car in "L" and shut off the engine; the transmission would then lock into Park.

Your wife checks the transmission fluid level?!? :beer:cool:

MY wife doesn't know where the hood release is, or want to learn.

I actually have, from the passenger seat of my friends 70 Nova. We were racing on the street and somehow he went from first all the way to reverse.
Locked up the wheels real good. Amazingly the tranny still worked after that.

early corvettes had Powerglides with a backward pattern for the same reason.
:Dou:A friend in High school had, a 67 Camaro that he would slap/speed shift. One time he slapped up clear to reverse at WOT................. poor, U joint never had a chance.:(

:TU: That's, better than the accelerator start on mine.

I believe it works on the brake light circuit.
Maybe, She may have been going from N to R? But, either way it should've been locked out, with no brakes applied (?)
    Agian; I'm glad, everyone's OK :)

Mine was a '73 88 455. When in 'S' it would shift out of first later, than when in 'D'. That car would really move! But not as fast as my best friend's '73 Riviera GS :pp

I was riding in an AWD Subaru Outback going about 80 MPH on I15. We hit a slick spot, the car spun 180 degrees, keeping almost all of that speed, and then went back onto dry pavement. Driving backwards at 75 MPH with the car still in drive was a pretty smokey experience...

I actually ended up buying the car earlier this year... absolutely no mechanical issues from that incident. Subaru builds em tough I guess.

You may want to sit in the car and do some testing to see if that can really happen. Could be a fail on Hyundai's part if so.
