  3. The "Group Buy" for the 1967-68 Deluxe Steering wheel recasting is now officially "Open". Now is the time to start sending in the wheels. The latest date that the wheels must be received by Kochs is 31 March 2025 The cost for each wheel is $750. The only "up front cost" is your shipping the wheel. If you send in more than one wheel, each additional wheel will cost $700. Shipping and insurance to Kochs and return shipping will be extra. Cost to Rebuild a Posi?

    I'm talking to someone about a posi rear for my 69 GS. He has a correct 3.42 10-bolt posi, but says the posi isn't engaging / locking up. has been told by someone who knows that it needs to be rebuilt. Gears, housing, etc in good shape.

    How much does that cost? Anyone got a price range, given various what-needs-doin scenarios?

    Well, it basically depends on the builder. Dont go to a normal shop (even though they are quite easy0 you have to have special tools to do it, and it costs about 100 for parts plus about 2-4 hours labor. Go to Ebay, and you can probably find a rebuild kit for pretty cheap. Then just find someone to rebuild it. total shouldnt be more than about 200-300. BUT, you might go another way.. there is people selling new posi units on ebay for quite cheap maybe as cheap or cheaper than your used one. Just take a look. type the word "posi' and the list will go on for just about anything you want. From a hemi dragster to a vw jetta. (like those popsicle sticks ever need one! they usually just take the mainshaft and shove them through the case when the clutch is dumped)

    I've seen posi clutch packs and shims on ebay for as low as $125 (for an 8.5 rear), and from what I understand, rebuilding a posi means pulling and disassembling the carrier, replacing the clutches, and reassembling.

    Is there more to it than that?

    The '64-67 BOP 8.2's & the '68-70 BUICK 8.2 tenbolts used cone type posi carriers...usually fairly expensive in topnotch shape in the strongest designs & best ratio's. FWIW, all the '68-70 BUICK 8.2 units I've had were 4 pinion cone type units, say that, though have never had the highest ratio design (there were 4 different ratio '68-70 Buick 8.2 carriers).

    Rebuilding cone type posi carriers...
    Mike Garrison had someone in his area rebuilding cone type 8.2 posi carriers, ie, remachining the backsides of the cones then shimming the cones up, reassembling, & doing a breakaway test. For those in need of this service, might ck with Mike.

    Buying "rebuild" kits on e-Bay, I'd be wary of what one is actually buying... Ton of substandard Chinese bearings & cheapy seals floating around, & even if there is a bearing kit offered for a "BOP" 8.2, it will not contain the same parts needed for a '68-70 BUICK 8.2.

    Buying a new bearing/race/ seal/shim kit, whether it be out of Summit or a Drivetrain house, often is not that smart, as a good differential builder will have a huge selection of cast spacers, shims, GM service spacers, etc, & can actually save the customer money in the long run, by using one side shim, a GM service spacer, one cast shim. Otherwise one stacking up becoux amt of expensive thin side shims, or buying the near $50 interlocking side shim stacks, just to set backlash...
