Looking for the correct set up to ad to the 68 Cat. Searching the www I came up with several styles of buttons and the release itself; would this be the right one for a 68 Wildcat?: PS: I already have a second vacuum canister under the right front fender, so I assume I don't need a third one o No:
I believe that may be for an early '60s model GM Rob. o No: The correct unit for your '68 Cat is vacuum operated, and has a RED push button that mounts in a recess inside the glove box. Check your '68 Shop Manual vacuum diagram to see where all the bits 'n pieces go. :TU:
If this is right I have a red button somewhere...If I find it its yours...I have a few extra vacuum actuators around too. On the 65's I think the trickiest part to find is the lock extension-the bit that goes through the latch has an articulated extension to extend it past the latch through to the vacuum actuator.
The one pictured was advertised as coming from a 66 Cadillac; since some GM parts were already quite generic at the time I thought it might fit my Cat as well (and having the lines with it was an extra plus): this one's is off the list. Will keep my eyes open for a correct set. Thanks for the offer, Ted; if you ever find that red release button I'm interested. Thank you both for your replies.
The same is true for correct '68 units too, but I have seen complete units on 'evilBay' auctions - just keep looking Rob !! Most of the '68 'full size' units were similar for all models, so check LeSabre, Riviera, and Electra listings too. :TU:
I have that setup sitting in my basement. Actuator and red button. Came out of a 67 Riv. If you like, I can dig it up and post a pic
It's true the coupling/lockshaft is one of the hardest parts to find for these vac setups. TPP repros one now for another car that may work, or could be modified to work if you can't find one.
From the description Randy gave here earlier, I guess it is. But looking at the item for a 68 Wildcat on buickfarm.net there it is stated it is interchangable with Electra and LeSabre o No: : http://www.buickfarm.net/index.php?option=com_redshop&view=product&pid=2399&Itemid=3 Randy: went through both, the chassis manual and body manual, but couldn't find anything else related to vacuum line routing than: (Riviera) and
Sorry Rob - it's been quite a while since my old Cat days. Fig 8-24, p.8-10 is the one you want (... a concealed unit). Not 100% sure if Jason's '67 Riv unit will work on your '68 Cat, but it certainly is a correct type! My '68 Riv has a vacuum trunk release and there is a flat steel, spring loaded, extension link from the trunk lock that fits into to the vacuum unit actuator, and it may be a different extension link, or set up on the other models (...LeSabre, Wildcat, or Electra) ? That Buick Farm reference pic doesn't really show the actuator link ? The '68 Parts Book shows '66-'68 50,60,8000 vacuum unit same part #4547284, and '66-'68 Riv (9000) different part # 4845199? o No: To instal a unit - just 'T' off a vacuum source outside the firewall and route the rubber hose through the firewall over to the glove box switch area, and from there to the back of the car, down the air duct kick panel, under the carpet (...on the passenger side), into the trunk area, and up through the trunk lid inner panel to the vacuum unit nipple. Leave some access hose (...12"+ or so), in the entire system to allow for future trimming to eliminate or fix cracked/split hose ends which may occur as the rubber hose ages - nobody will see it, as it's all concealed !! :TU:
Randy; the one from Jason is on its way. In 2 weeks orso I know whether it will fit. Still have to get a few meters of vacuum hose. Thanks for the routing tips!! Will report here soon.
