Help - I'm trying to set up a wireless network and one computer is running Windows 98. My USB network adapter will not run on 98 "regular", only 98SE. Is there an update/upgrade disk to install Windows 98 second edition? Thats the CD that installs over an existing version? The one I have is for installation on a new computer and I don't want to have to go thru that....:af:

as unfortunate as it may sound.. i recommend upgrading to windows xp... simply has the better wireless networking abilities... whether this is an option or not that's another story but i figured i'd mention that XP does indeed do everything you want with a wireless network right outta the box... i hate windows and i even like their wireless setup in XP...

98 and ME i believe support wireless networking but its very very limited.. so you might find it doesn't even work for you... i won't stop you from trying but thats the message i got from when i did my research on wireless networking for the equipment i bought for home.. i just immediately upgraded my computers to XP

    Bill-

98SE was basically a set of patches and bugfixes to Win98 (which was a set of patches and bugfixes to Win95 :) ). If your system is running OK, the upgrade shouldn't give you that many problems. If however you think your system crashes a lot now, it will most likely be much worse with SE. I would do one of the following (listed in order of preference):

    1) If it's a desktop, get a simple cabled network adapter (that works with 98) instead of the USB one. It's much cheaper (probably only about $15) and will give you fewer problems in the long run. Heck, I'll give you one for the cost of shipping.

    2) Try loading the drivers on your 98 system and see if the adapter works anyway. Odds are it will.

    3) Max out the RAM on your system and upgrade to Windows 2000, forsaking 98SE and ME entirely. I would only do this if your system is 300Mhz or faster.

    4) Back up everything on your system, wipe the system drive clean by deleting all of the partitions and reformatting the drive, and doing a fresh install of 98SE on the system.

Under no circumstances should you install Windows ME or Microsoft Bob. Send me a PM if you need details on anything. Hope this helps.

    Oops, forgot.

The 98SE upgrade itself involves getting a 98SE install disk and going through the installation it provides. It's simple and it should go smoothly, taking about a half hour to finish. Back up your entire system before you do it.

Since it is a separately licensed product from Microsoft, there is no legal way to download this upgrade for free off the web.

    Bill,

My son's computer is a 450Mhz K6 with plain Win 98 not SE or ME only updates. I bought a USB type wireless card for him and he connects to our home network with no trouble. The USB device is a COMP USA brand that I paid $30 for in the store. I am using a Linksys Router/Broadcast/4-port hub and can't remember the model. I think I paid $69 at Wal-mart for it. We have two XP machines, one Win 2K Pro machine and the Win 98 machine all networked and sharing a cable connection with no issues. I definately agree that newer software, faster devices, etc. are great but you should be able to make yours work without too much expense.
