Hi Guys, I bought the following carb:

Rochester quadrajet car set up for 1969 1970 1971 Buick 400 and 455 engines all transmissions.
This was originally an 800 CFM 1977 Olds carb 17057252 that now has a new primary throttle shaft with Buick linkage.
It has a new electric choke, (easy hook up one wire to a key on hot), that eliminates the manifold mounted choke coil.
Internally it has #76 jets, #50 rods, and CV secondary rods.

I am having problems with cold starts. When cold I goto start and it will not light up. I end up pumping the pedal and holding to the floor and it will finally start. Once it starts it tries to die and will slowly miss and build rpms. There is tons of smoke coming out of the back and it has a heavy gas smell. Once I start it for the day, it will start fine for the rest of the day even after cooling off.

I have tried not pumping the accellorator, half pump, full pump, 3 pumps, 3 half pumps. Nothing works.

    Thanks, Jeff

    Jeff,
Are you sure it is the carb? Are you running points ignition?

Well pretty sure. I have a unilite ignition. It is definately flooding out. I still have a headache from starting it this afternoon. Very rich.

It turns over fast and will almost start with just a touch of the starter at first. Then I have to go through the ordeal for starting.

Sounds like it is flooding out. Float level? Sticking needle/seat??

Well the carb was freshly rebuild by a pro. I hate to crack it open and mess it up. I was thinking about sending it to John Osborne and letting him go through it. I was thinking it might be something in the choke system. I don't get that top adjustor on it.

Could be the choke pull off. Set the choke, then apply vacuum to the pull off with a mityvac or equivalent. It should open the choke about 1/4". It need to do that, or the motor will choke out and not run.

Thanks Larry, That may be it. I think I messed with that top adjustment when I first got it and couldn't see it doing anything.

Well Larry, I went and used my minivac on it, you know my mouth and an old piece of vacume line. And it was nowhere close to proping it open after the vacume was applied. I now have it opening about 1/4 inch when the vacume is on. I will see what happens in the morning. Thanks for your help.

    That's it Jeff,
The purpose of the choke pull off is to open the choke after the engine starts. Play with the adjustment until the engine starts and runs smoothly. I said 1/4", but it may be more or less.

Thanks for the help Larry, it did the trick. I went out this morning, pumped the pedal once to set the choke, turned the key and it fired up instantly and was idleing fine.
