Got a 4speed in my 1972 GS. I recently bought this car so i dont know if this kind of stuff has been worked on with it before. When i press the clutch in its fine but releasing it seem to be like its coming out in steps. Is this some simple bearing, bushing, lubrication fix, or is the clutch always gonna be a choppy release on a non-assisted clutch

My guess is it probably needs to be greased. there are alot of joints in a Z bar setup, rease them all. Check the bushing in the pedals too. :3gears:

    Lube points:

Pedal bushing - Need to pull pedals out to grease it

Arm bushing inside car - under the dash

Arm bushing engine compartment - under master cylinder

Z-Bar upper bushing - under master cylinder

Z-Bar lower bushing - next to frame on drivers side

Push Rod - next to frame on drivers side

Clutch fork - You may be able to pull the boot on the bellhousing and sneak some grease in the pivot area with a needle adapter for a grease gun

If the throw out bearing is dry, then the tranny and bell housing needs to be pulled.

    How is the return spring????

All of this hardware is subject to wear and improper movement after all of these years, and in my case 300,000+ miles. Case in point: 9 months ago I found my pedal would not return all the way. A little investigation revealed that the bar under the dash was making contact with some of the steel dash support stuff. :Do No: Only solution was to get underneath there and "massage" :spank: stuff out of the way.
