I have heard the term 'close ratio' used for the late 60's M-22s and so on, but never with the 64-era BWs. I was reading the service manual on my 64 Wildcat stick car, and it states the BW trans was a close ratio, with the 1-4 ratios being 2.20, 1.64, 1.31, and 1.00 respectively. So, my question is, what kinds of ratios makes a trans a 'close ratio' vs a non close ratio? Are these BW ratios similar to the Muncies? Just curious. Thank you, Matt
If you want to compare, here are the Muncie ratios- M20- 2.52, 1.88, 1.46, 1.00 M21- 2.20, 1.64, 1.28, 1.00 The gears in your Borg Warner are very close to the M21, so I woulds classify it as a close ratio. GM used the 21 on cars with 3.42 gears and numerically higher. And naturally, the 20 was used on numerically lower final drive ratios
