Cleaning the aluminum code tag on a trans

I need to pull the trans out of the X because of a front pump leak. This time I want to actually clean it up, but I don’t want to remove the BB print on the tag. Any suggestions?

Mineral spirits and a chip brush

Max Damage I'm working on it!

I would just wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth. I think Jason might be saying stay off the paint entirely?

Mineral spirits will not remove any paint but will dissolve the grease. Do not use brake cleaner or carb spray as that will remove the paint off the tag.

As long as you can still get it. It's banned in NY

While it's nice to save the paint if you can, the reality here is that the pertinent info is stamped on that tag, so the paint is not actually required.. but nice to have..

Most trans shops use heat ovens and solvent to clean the case of a Trans before Rebuilding so if a trans was done before its probably already removed the paint .

I just took this pic. When I pulled it the first time in the fall of 2021 to change the converter seal, I left the 50 years of road crud and oil on it. It had never been out before then according to the original owner’s son.

Pressure washer took all the loose stuff off. I don’t know how much cleaner I’ll get it, but it’s 100 times better.

That's very nice for an original tag, don't see many that survive that well. I would tape it off with duct tape if your going to do any more cleaning on the case, especially with harsh chemicals such as oven cleaner, which many guys use to clean trans cases.
